alcoholic health issues

jjj My husband is an active alcoholic and he is now facing some health issues--
one of the health issue is impotence...and the dr gave him viagra well fine but that doesnt mean that there may be another reason for the disfunction in the first place--fro instance he could have vascular disease which effects the blood flow and that could be a reason for impotence--or maybe other things going on....
another thing is that he has been having a hoarse voice off and on for quite some time ---- breathing problems which thought it was his asthma so the dr put him on an inhaler it didnt help-- so the dr put him on symbicort which is used to treat asthma or copd..... if it is asthma he should be releaved right away-- however, he is still having breathing problems as well as some coughing....
then he is having a pain on the left side of his chest he said that it is from when he was working and he thinks that he has pulled a muscle.... but, the breathing problems could it not be a heart issue???
then the last thing that he has is a pain on the right side of his back which he has had for years... and it never goes away.... one med site thinks it may be his liver (he wont go to the dr to get this investigated)
This issues are hard to live with and it doesnt help that he still will come home and drink every day from the time he walks in the door until he goes to bed...... one of this days I am afraid that he will end up in the hospital with a whole list of things that have gone wrong from the years of alcohol abuse--------- daisylee

Re: alcoholic health issues

When I was drinking heavily many years ago, I had many of your husband’s symptoms: cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, some chest and back pain, hoarseness. I was convinced it was heart trouble or lung cancer.

My astute doctor listened to my story and gave me a sample of Aciphex, a proton pump inhibitor for acid reflex/GERD.

I told him that I didn’t have any heartburn and he said it didn’t matter to just take it for a week.

Less than a week later all of my symptoms had disappeared.

Some of these PPI/GERD drugs are now over the counter. I’d pick up a weeks supply and let him take it to see what happens.

Sometimes it’s just a simple problem and I hope that is the case for your husband.

Re: alcoholic health issues

I hate to say...all of his issues would probably stop if he stopped drinking.
I can say this because I stopped drinking alcohol 5 years ago. I was an active alcoholic for 20 plus years..I developed all of the symtoms your husband has and I thought the solution was going to be found in some other medicaton. Then I had high blood pressure and it made me take a look at myself. I had never had high blood pressure before and I KNEW it was due to my drinking. When I stopped all the symptoms stopped. They can give him all kinds of medicine that will help all kinds of symptoms, the problem is...they willl just alleviate the symptoms and mask the real problem. He won't admit any of the symptoms are caused by alcohol. I know I didn't. He won't stop drinking alcohol until he is ready. I'm sorry that you have to watch him kill himself...and he isn't enjoying it either. It seems that he NEEDS to drink everyday and he will continue to NEED to drink everyday until he admits himself to a hospital so that they can help him stop. But, he has to WANT to stop first.

Re: alcoholic health issues

I am thinking that it is fair to say that he is getting into some serious health issues...he was given an asthma inhaler that is also used to treat copd--so it is so obvious that things are going wrong...
the sad thing is that he of course doesnt want to quit--- i dont think that he enjoys himself either i think that if he didnt drink at this point he would die without it because of the withdrawl.... he doesnt even appear to be drunk any more-- it has consumed his whole entire being----its sooooo sad.............
