Re: My psychiatrist wants blood tests and EKG on me- I'm scared!
Having gone through several different psychiatrists(for various reasons, mostly incompetence) if I were you, I would be very happy that your psychiatrist wants to keep your serum blood levels and heart montitored regularly !
There are way too many Dr's out there that just prescibe the meds, see a person every couple of months for 10 minutes and never bother to do proper follow up tests.
...and your right, Dr's who treat adults do tend to be..."more straightforward". In childrens pysychiatry there is more of a sugar coated attitude, as a great majority of the information goes to the parents, rather than the child.
The reason these tests need to be run are due to many factors, if you look up your particular medication you will see what possible side-effects may occur from that drug. Your Dr is simply making sure to catch any problems that might pop up.
...and if you actually like your Dr, and you feel that they are listening, then hold on to that Dr, the ones that truly care seem to run about 50% who care, and 50% who are in it for the paycheck.
But above anything else, do not quit treatment, I am not sure of your actual condition, but trust me on this, as someone who has tried to "self-control" my meds, and tried to convince myself that I didnt need help, or that I was smarter than the Dr, and didnt need them. Keep up your visits, if your not happy with that particular Dr, find another one, but DO NOT just stop your treatment, I went for almost 35yrs without treatment, and my life fell apart, if I had of had treatment way back when, my life would have been completely different.
Your very young, dont let life pass you by just because you dont like a few tests.
I hope that might lessen some of your fears...and if it brought up new fears, please tell me, so that I can explain some of the reasons for what might be happening.
Stay Strong !
