17 yr old w/ constant Neck & Back pain - scoliosis
I'm 17 and when I went to 7th grade they told me I had scoliosis. I didn't have much pain then only when carried my school bag and stuff but last year 2015 it got more worst then ever. My spine is on 35 degrees & I have pain all the time from the side of where my scoliosis goes in, I can't sit for to long I can't stand for to long and I can't barley lay down for too long mostly I wake up in the middle of the night beacuse I can't breath well and my rib hurts and it hurts so bad on the whole back all the way up too my neck and arms and I get this major headache. And a couple months ago I got problems with my kidney on that side too It got inflameted but they didnt know why and they suspected it was the scoliosis beacuse it was not anything else. I've been subcribed aspirin only and they don't help... I don't want to live off pills either. I don't know what to do anymore I can't image what this will be like when I get older. My doctor says that It can't be possible to have that pain with "only" 35 degree. I'm so fustraded. Sometimes I can barley move or bend. I try my best to workout and keep my body strong anyways and I do pilates and yoga a lot but i'm moslty so tierd because I can't sleep beacuse of the pain so I barley do that anymore. Can someone please help me out here what should I do? :(

Welcome to the board. I am sorry you are in pain, and that you are having problems getting people to understand that you are in pain and it is affecting your daily life. I am also sorry that I didn't see your post until this morning. I usually post on the "Back Problems" section.

One of the problems of scoliosis is that it can worsen as one ages. It is not just something that begins in childhood and remains the same. I wonder when you were given the 35 degree information, and if it is still current?

Scoliosis causes the bones of the spine (vertebrae) to corkscrew. This can cause the head to be carried off to one side and causes the placement of the shoulders and hips to be off. This curve, depending on its location, can affect the lungs, making it hard to breathe. And, of course, this can affect the person's ability to sleep well, or even sleep at all.

Have you seen an orthopedic spine surgeon? There are some fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeons who specialize in the treatment of scoliosis, but any orthopedic spine surgeon would be able to diagnose you and provide a plan for treatment. It may be that a course of physical therapy would help you, or you may need to wear a brace to keep the curve from worsening.

In the meantime, you can use a heating pad to make the muscles more comfortable. Sounds like your exercise program is sound. Walking remains the best exercise for those of us with back problems. Yoga and Pilates will help to keep your core muscles strong and balanced.

I think the most important thing you can do is to see a spine specialist to find out the most appropriate treatment. Other doctors do not have the specific training needed to differentiate which back and spine problems may seem "not that bad" but in reality are causing a great deal of pain and are making it impossible to live a normal life.
