Why intravenous pyelogram (IVP) ordered for a 12yo with congenital scoliosis?

As an adolescent I was diagnosed with congenital scoliosis due to my L5 vertebrae being fused with my sacrum, resulting in an approximate 5-7 degree curvature of my spine. I remember having to do an IVP because of this and am wondering what that procedure was checking for, i.e. how could scoliosis affect kidney/urinary tract function? Thanks!
