Braced for scoliosis now in horrible pain

I was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was in the 4th grade I had better then a 53 degree curve of the spine. I wore a Milwaukee brace for a few years and had to wear it for 23 hours a day. Then they tried the electric stimulator which failed. I was so disappointed because I didn't have to wear the brace. Then I went to a body cast brace till 9th grade. I was so embarrassed, made fun of and in the 9th grade I tried to wear baggy clothing. I look back now and wish I would have told people.

I had my daughter in 1994 and don't remember having any pain. I am not 45 years old and the pain is getting worse. I know it sounds weird, but even when working out, I had that under arm fat only under my back arm on the right. I wonder if the reason I can't get rid of it is because of the way my curve is and how my back sticks out a bit. You see it mostly if I bend over and touch my toes. My whole back hurts, but mainly the right upper back where it sticks out, where the curve is. I will be laying down and it hurts to bad to get up and move. Sometimes if I sneeze or cough, I dread it cuz my back hurts and jerks so bad.

My question is, I never really had any doctor check my scoliosis becasue after the brace got off in the 9th grade, I thought I was home free cuz I was done growing and the curve can't get any worse. BUT CAN IT?

I was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2005 and had my left kidney out so I get chest xrays done all the time. They always tell me I have scoliosis but I tell them I knew and was treated.

Is is possible that I could have issues and maybe it is getting worse? I was thinking maybe I should see a doctor, but everyone tells me how their back hurts and it's age.

Any advice? I am sitting at work typing this and my upper right back hurts now.

    Curved and soar

    Hello simplegirl101,
I am sorry to read that you are in so much pain. I can only recomand that you go to a doctor, who is a specalised in the spine. Because he/she is the only one who can tell you were your pain is coming from and get you the right treatment. Mabe some physiotherapie?

Do you know how big your curve is right now? And you could check on the x-rays they do all the time if your curve got worse. Because that can happen. There are diffret reasons why that can happen, it could be because of hormone, stress or even from your kidney operation.

I hope I could help you. If you have more qousions please ask them.

Thank you for responding to my post.

I have no clue if my curve got bad. I thought once you were done growing and got your brace off that it couldn't get worse. I guess it could happen. I actually haven't been checked for my back since 9th grade which was 31 years ago. I think I will take your advice and go get my curve checked out just to make sure nothing is wrong. Better save then sorry. I get nervous because they say it can press against your organs and all.

Since you are in pain, I would suggest you get it checked. A curve can develop at any age. While you stopped growing, your spine has not stopped changing. As we age, the discs lose moisture which causes them to compact. The disc space loses height which brings the bones of the spine, the vertebrae, closer together. If muscles and soft tissue are not balanced, it can pull the bones out of position. So, just to be safe, get it checked!

Like in my previous post I can only recommand that you go see a specialist. But if your curve is not significant over 70 Cobb you don`t need to worry about any problems with your organs. Because they have till then enough room to move around and to function normaly.

It woukld be nice if you can keep me posted what your doctor said.

Yes you should get a recent X-ray. With scoliosis it continues to curve as we age. Some more than others depending on life style and illness and disease.

I have scoliosis since a child. It has become much worse over the years and many other complications from this disorder. As far a the arm thing that would be a good question to ask your doctor. Also ask your doctor for therapy for scoliosis . It can help keep the twisting and turning in check and help if you are in any pain . They teach how to move, lift and exercise a to strengthen back muscles that holds the spine.

I have X-ray done every year . As u get older it a good idea to get a MRI.

    I thought the same.

When I was first diagnosed in 9th grade and started wearing a Boston brace throughout my teens (but not as diligently as I should have), I was led to believe that once my spine matured it wouldn't get any worse, that the curvature only occurs when the patient is still growing. When I reached my 2nd year in college, I stopped wearing the brace, and I think the curve was about 25-30 degrees. But now I'm 50, and a recent x-ray shows that the curve is 50 degrees now, and the spine surgeon I spoke to said it's likely that by the time I'm 70, the curve could be 70 degrees, and could cause respiratory constriction problems. I'm considering surgery, but not decided yet. Big decision, lots of time and medical leave I'd have to take from my job.

I'm trying a brace first, but that can be kind of uncomfortable at times, because I go through my day feeling like I'm strapped in like a skydiver or mountain climber.

Re: Braced for scoliosis now in horrible pain

I went to the ortho doctor in April and it ended up being a scoliosis appointment. The doctor there told me that my pain is not from my scoliosis and that it's from arthritis and as you get older. Then I asked if high heels were really bad for scoliosis and he said my scoliosis is done getting worse and that high heels hurt every ones back. He came off as a big shot ortho doctor who didn't seem to care about my pain. Then offered PT 2-3 times a week which will cost me $100 to $150 a week in co-Pays and then mentioned getting shots. I guess I will deal with it. I can't believe him.I feel like a hypochondriac now.

Did you have a MRI or did the doctor just tell you it was "arthritis?"

I do not have scoliosis but do have back issues and have had three lumbar surgeries, including two fusions. I can tell you that heel height makes a huge difference in my levels of discomfort or pain. My surgeon told me the first time I walked through the door that my days of wearing any height heel were over!

You are not a hypochondriac. I am sure your pain is real. A course of physical therapy and a series of epidural steroid injections are standard first treatments for back pain.

Hi, I have scoliosis and arthritis. I think you need to see another doctor. It is very important you have a good rapport with the doctor. A doctor with a good bedside manner is easier to talk to and understand.

    Hey Simplegirl
I feel for you. When I was in my early 20's I was diagnosed with scoliosis. Not near as severe as yours it seems but enough to leave me in constant pain from headaches. I found relief from an excellent chiropractor. My MD at that time told me I should just learn to live with the pain. He wasn't my MD much longer. Also learning some exercises that balance the muscles is also helpful for keeping things in alignment. I think some Blood Flow Stimulation Therapy might also help with the arthritis.

Re: Braced for scoliosis now in horrible pain

First off, I want to thank all of you for all of your responses and support.

When I went to the specialist for my back, I wasn't going for a scoliosis visit since I have been treated with my brace to stop my better then 50 degree curve from getting worse. But on the questionnaire, I had to put all of it down. I felt as if I wasted my time. He only did a back x-ray and basically said I have arthritis, but t I am not sure if that is why I am in so much pain. He told me the pain I am having is not from my scoliosis and my bad curve.

When I sneeze, it hurts so bad to sneeze if I am laying down and my whole back jerks or when I am getting off the couch, it hurts to get up sometimes and I feel humped over for a few seconds. When I am working a photo event or on my feet for a long time, my back kills me. I even bought good Sketchers that have support and comfort to wear for my photography events and work. Thank God I am an administrative assistant at work where I sit a lot.

Re: Braced for scoliosis now in horrible pain

I am only speculating here, so just take this as a possibility of what could be causing pain.

The facet joints, which are synovial joints located at each vertebral level, positioned to link the vertebrae together, are what develop arthritis. They, along with the discs, allow us to bend and twist and have movement in the back and neck. The joints can enlarge which can put pressure on a spinal nerve. They can develop osteophytes, etc. Because the pain and symptoms can occur intermittently, frequently and unpredictably, people are often told it is "all in your head" or that it is psychosomatic.

This disease is called "facet arthropathy" and you can find lots of information about it online.

One of the suggested treatments is maintaining good posture and structural alignment which I imagine is difficult for someone with scoliosis.

    Moist heat usually feels good.

This is usually picked up on x-ray and a CT scan is better than MRI for seeing the joints, but if there is also disc involvement, then MRI is more helpful.

Diagnostically you can have a nerve block to figure out where the pain is coming from. Then there is a nerve ablation procedure that can be performed.

I am pretty shocked that you were told you scoli wouldn't progress. My ortho told me once a curve reaches 50 Gravity will progress the curve as you age regardless of the end of your growth. I have scoli top curve is 18 and to complete my s curve my lower back has a 32 curve. For the most part my scoli is managed by regular chiropractic care and staying very strong but my spine is still degenerating faster than normal... My spine is aged at 55-60...I'm 23 years old. I wouldn't overlook your scoliosis. There is no treatment for it other than the surgery and we want to avoid that at all costs. I would get an update on your scoli severity and have your discs and well... The whole works looked at via MRI. I hope you find your answers soon!
