    Question Teen Getting Worse

    Hi,
I am 18 years old, recently, and I have scoliosis. I have double scoliosis and the most recent measurements are in the low 40s and upper 30s. It has been a while so I cannot remember my exact measurements. Laying down, I have noticed my left rib cage to come out 2 times higher than my right side and I am curving a lot more than when I got my last x-ray. My mom doesn't think there is any way they can treat me since my last doctor said the same thing. They think that I have grown to a point where it isn't going to get worse or better. I constantly have back pain, struggle to find comfort, and have noticed me sleeping in the shape of a "C" almost. Also, one of my legs has gotten to be 1/2 an inch shorter if that is even possible. I don't have a back doctor anymore, but it really bugs me and hurts, especially when I breathe, it seems like something is rubbing against my rib cage (in a bad way). What should I do? Any advice?

You would still qualify as a pediatric case, so maybe a different doctor could give you a second opinion? Do you have a major university hospital close by? I would look for a fellowship trained orthopedic spine specialist. There are many who specialize in scoliosis. If you check out the website for the Scoliosis Research Society(-it is a .org, not a .com) they can help you locate a specialist in your area. There are also some amazing stories about teens who overcame the same thing you have. Check out the story about the LPGA golfer-she had her surgery at 18 years old and is a national player on the tour now!!!

The danger of scoliosis is that the curve gets so bad that it begins to affect the organs, including the lungs, making it difficult to breathe, etc.

You need to find a spine surgeon that specializes in scoliosis. Many do not have experience treating it and you may not be getting the best advice. It is important that you are examined by a scoliosis specialist before things get worse...even if it involves going to a larger city to find a specialist.

You have to get treatment for it, your bones do not stop growing absolutely at 18
    I had surgery at 19!!!

I know now u feel completely. I had the same issue diagnosed at bout your age
The only difference was mine is from t3 to l3 so basically my whole spine
I went to a orthopedic surgeon had it corrected an no pain since
Def look into it. Don't let it get bad. I had a much worse curve then yours an mine was rapidly curving a few inches a month. Ended up being 59 degrees day of surgery. An I was told once it gets to sixty degrees they can't operate. Not saying that will happen but def look into seeing a orthopedic surgeon

    Re: Teen Getting Worse

Like @momzworkin said, I highly recommend getting a second (or third) opinion. Doctors are not right 100% of the time, unfortunately! Having a condition where it can hurt to breathe is awful, so keep working until you find a solution.

Maybe try one of those natural doctors/chiropractors (I forgot what they are called exactly, but the ones that only use natural oils and methods on their patients), they can work wonders sometimes.

Until then, continue to do the proper scoliosis exercises to help your situation. Even if you aren't "supposed" to get worse, it could still happen since you are young. So research some exercises to help you feel better and to prevent your scoliosis from getting worse.

    Good luck!
