Taking L-Arginine For Erections

I have heard two different cases in regard to taking l-arginine;
The first is that you take it an hour before sex.
The other is that you need to take it on a daily basis for 4-6 weeks before you start to see it work.

Which one is true?

I've read that the effects are noticable around the 2nd to 3rd week.

L-arginine has been promoted to increase erectile quality because it is a source of nitric oxide. L-arginine is an amino acid that is present in most foods and is readily available in your body. The theory of L-arginine is that if large enough quantities of this amino acid are present, then there is an increased source of nitric oxide. The problem is that the tissues in the penis will need to break down the L-arginine to get the available nitric oxide. The problem with this is that there is only a certain amount of nitric oxide that is needed to stimulate cGMP production to cause a full erection. Any excess nitric oxide will be excreted by the body in the usual way. Your penis would need to be able to convert enough L-arginine into nitric oxide to increase the cGMP. If it cannot do this, then more sourse material (the L-arginine) will not help. However, if due to your diet or other metabolic deficiency, you have a low availability of nitric oxide source material, then L-arginine may be beneficial. There were a number of studies published in respectable medical research journals that demonstrated the effects of nitric oxide and on L-arginine's role in nitric oxide formation. The studies were done on rats and diabetes induced rabbits. These studies were not done on humans yet the websites that try to sell L-arginine as an erection enhancer try to extrapolate the rat and rabbit data to humans. You can decide for yourself if it is applicable. If you do think so, then the recommended dosage is 3-4 grams of L-arginine daily for two weeks before improvement is seen. If you want to try to increase nitric oxide, then a better and more efficient way is to purchase the raw nitric oxide from body building stores. Since nitric oxide does cause blood vessel dilation (not specific to the penis), many body builders take nitric oxide suppliments. In my opinion, if you want to increase nitric oxide, take the raw nitric oxide suppliment. You're eliminating the step where the tissues in your penis have to convert the L-arginine to nitric oxide.

Personally, I have tried both. Viagra still works best. BTW, if you are thinking about combining Viagra with nitric oxide, you'll just be wasting money.
