Symptoms, but tests are negative. What could it be?

Hi, hopefully someone here can give me some answers as I'm totally confused.

I'm a 27yo bisexual male. I do have a history of STDs as I caught both chlamydia and gonorrhea several years ago.

Back in Febuary, I recieved oral from a new partner and after about a month I developed what I thought was an STD, I had discomfort in my urethrea as well as during urination at times and when milking my penis I noticed a discharge. Panicked, I went to a local health clinic and got a swab and a blood test done. They noticed a slight discharge so they gave me a shot of what I believe to be Ceftriaxone as well as a some Doxycycline and told me to come back in two weeks for results. I didn't finish the Doxy as it started to give me muscle and joint pain but things cleared up. I never did go back for my results.

Fast forward to about 4 weeks ago, I had unprotected oral and anal sex, both insertive, with a semi-regular partner. About two weeks after the episode one morning I started to notice the discomfort in my urethrea and upon miking my penis I got a slightly cloudy discharge. I again went to the clinic to get tested. While there they brought my results from when I was there earlier in the year and said I tested negative for gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis. They did a swab of my urethrea but this time they gave me a gram of Azythromycin, which I took immediately, and told me to come back in two weeks for my results. After a week things seemed to be back to normal, but on Wednesday upon waking up I noticed a cloudy discharge which after milking my penis produced a signifigant ammount which was fainly yellow in color. Knowing my results were tomorrow I decided to wait until then to figure out what was wrong.

Upon returning to the clinic, they tell me my test results for gonorrhea and chlamydia were again negative! I was stumped and told them of my discharge so they did another swab and this time treated me with a shot and another gram of azythromycin. They didn't want to at first as my last two tests came back negative so they are thinking it's another problem not STD related. I go back for my results at the end of the month.

As of right now the discharge is still there but less and less. But I'm confused, is it possible to get two false negatives? I figure the swab would be dead on for infection detection but even still, what could this be?

Re: Symptoms, but tests are negative. What could it be?

This happened to me too. Had abnormal discharge-- very little though. Sometimes clear, sometimes milky. But had small, greenish spots on my underwear in the mornings. So I got tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia. Both negative but took antibiotics for chlamydia anyway. The gonorrhea test was a cotton swab test. My discharge was very little so I wasn't surprised when that test came back negative. They probably didn't get any of the discharge during that visit. But the discharge went away eventually, after about 1 to 2 weeks. So I'm not sure what it was. My doctor just said it could've been some irritation in my penis.

I would like to know (1) How accurate are the tests for gonorrhea and chlamydia? Could you test negative for them but still have them? (2) There must be many more STD's out there that can cause these symptoms. Is it more likely that the cause is from some unknown, less malicious STD than either gonorrhea or chlamydia?

Even if I do test negative for gonorrhea and chlamydia, should I go ahead and take the antibiotics anyway? I had a relationship with a girl for a couple months who turned out to be a part-time escort in the past. Not knowing this, I had unprotected sex with her. I have symptoms for these STD's but I may test negative. So should I take the antibiotics anyway?
