Shingles timeline for pain and tiredness?

Iím a 64 yr old male, this is my second time with shingles, but I donít remember it was bad when I was 24. I guess this time it might be mild, but what is the timeline?
I started off with flu like body aches, next day red rash on chest, neck, and then back right side, I went to med unit, got valtrex. This is day 4 with blisters appearing. Mild pain, taking Advil. Iím usually very active with Golf and outdoor activities. Today I walked 2 miles and came back exhausted.
Hopefully I just have a mild case, however Iíve been reading a lot of 5-6 weeks recovery.
Does pain and tiredness peak at some point, leaving you with scabs and itching for a few weeks?
Thanks

Re: Shingles timeline for pain and tirednes

Hi Dan,

I think everybody is different. And it also probably depends on your physical health before you got them. Although, they normally come up when someone is extremely stressed or run down.

I wish I could offer a more definitive answer.

I think the best course of action is to get a lot of rest and try not to rush the recovery. If you push too hard and your body is not ready, it will just delay the recovery anyway. Try to be patient with yourself. Your body needs a lot of rest to fight this off.

Re: Shingles timeline for pain and tiredness?

Just wanted to give an update.
Day 4 , thought I was getting better, nope....evening was miserable with pain, no sleep.
Day 5 , more new blisters, some drying up.
Applied Calamine lotion, using Excederin for pain.
Day 6 , more pain, no sleep.
Day 7, blisters drying up, mild pain, over the hump
Day 8 ....minor itching feeling, think itís over

Update...Day 9 at 4am, had 2 hours of severe unbearable pain
Used Advil for day nine....I read in other blogs if you have a few set backs when you think itís over, you are probably at the near end
I would think my case is still considered mild

Could be. Although I don't know how you are doing it without pain medication. I would not have survived without it.

Good for you.

Update day 13- getting better every day...but..
Pain still comes and goes, mostly towards evenings. I think you are right...rest is the best, listen to your body.
I would have gotten pain medication, but I was out of town at the time. Days 3 through 6 I really could have used it for sure.

Re: Shingles timeline for pain and tiredness?

Update day 19-
I keep thinking it’s over....but
During the day I’m back to normal activities, just an annoying little discomfort.
At evening the nerves act up, feels like itchy poison ivy and creepy crawly insects walking on skin. Rash is almost all gone. I found out that a heating pad, or a microwaveable rice pack works wonders. Still using Advil.

I know it can drag out. Did your doctor mention Lidocaine to you? I used it and rubbed it into my skin where the pain was -- after the blisters had healed. It worked really well on my nerve pain.

Re: Shingles timeline for pain and tiredness?

I only had Valtrex, actually Valacyclovir. I was out of town so I never saw my doctor, just a minute Clinc.

Thanks for all your support.

No problem. Maybe if you called your doctor's office and told them what happened, they would phone it in for you? Or look online -- there are over the counter versions. Cream or ointment.

Re: Shingles timeline for pain and tiredness?

Final update Day 37-
I can finally say my shingles episode is over.
This has been a very weird time period. The last 15 days were some days good, some days with a few hours of pain and very itchy sensations. I did get another skin rash below my chest.( not shingles). The doctor gave me Triamcinolone Acetonide and said I could also use it for the shingles itching. It worked wonders.
So most sites are correct when they say 5 to 6 weeks recovery.
I feel very sorry for those who have longer complications, I never dreamed shingles is so nasty. Thank you SOE for all your support.

I'm so glad it's all over for you. Now take care of yourself and don't let yourself get too stressed or worn down again.
