Do shingles rash and bumps look different from HSV-2?

Can I determine if I have shingles or HSV-2 just by the appearance of the bumps? Symptoms include lymph node swelling in my groin area causing pain, random tingling and nerve twitch, rash and bumps on my lower back and left side of buttocks. I did some research online and both seems include those symptoms.

Iíve already seen the doctor and was prescribed Valtrax and a skin scrap test was performed. The doctor could not get much skin sample since there werenít any discharge and the bumps were small. Since my symptoms seem to be apparent in both shingles and HSV, I was wondering if there is something specific about the bumps that would determine if itís HSV or shingles? Like if there is no white discharge, would that disqualify it being HSV?

Hi Vital2, welcome to the boards.

Iím sorry that I donít know the answer to your question. I am also sorry you have this. I had shingles and it was a miserable experience. Good news is the medication works well. If you have any pain, talk to the doctor about ways he/she can help you be more comfortable while you heal.

in my humble opinion, because it is on your back and spreading, sounds like shingles. When I had shingles it started on my stomach but went all the way around to my back on one side of my body.

I got test results back and dr confirmed itís shingles and not HSV. Two days left of my Valtrax prescription and still have bumps and feeling body aches. How long is this supposed to last?

The rash is really starting to itch. What can I apply to make it stop itching?

From what I've just read...it stresses to not scratch or rub to avoid spreading the virus from the fluid in the vesicles. That would include wash cloths and towels as well as sheets, clothes, etc. In the meantime before they burst and dry up, you could try nonstick gauze and paper tape to cover them. Apparently, water compresses can help the drying process. Calamine, lanacaine, apple cider vinegar and a host of other stuff.

I searched "best itch creams for shingles"
    Hope you get relief,
