    Left Shoulder Pain

Hello. I've been kind of putting my shoulder pain off because I'm known to have "aches and pains", but this has been going on for the past month and just continues to worsen. It's in the side of my shoulder, just under where the acromion ends. From what I can tell from various diagrams, this is the rotator cuff area. I don't remember injuring my shoulder in any way, which is another reason I've been putting this off. It hurts to move my shoulder in basically any direction, but hurts the worst when I initially lift it up from resting, or when I extend my arm forward. I suppose I'm just kind of wondering if this could be my rotator cuff.

    Thanks.

Best way to find out is to see your doctor. He will most likely have an x-ray done first, then, if needed, an MRI. But, definitely sounds like something is wrong somewhere.

Mine hurt when I reached behind my back(i.e. reaching from drivers seat into the back seat), turned on a light switch, brushed my teeth & reached out for something.

Thanks! It's hurting pretty badly today, I may just go into the walk-in at my doctor's office later today.

I see a hand therapist twice a week for a different injury on my right arm, so yesterday when I went in, I had him take a look at it. He says that he thinks I strained my rotator cuff, but that I'd need to have an MRI on it to make sure that it's not torn.

Just an update- I went to the doctor's, she said it may be biceps tendonitis. I'm going for an xray, and starting physical therapy. If that doesn't help, I'm going to push for an MRI.

Just read online that an x-Ray doesn't show anything dealing with tendons. X-Rays are for bone problems, but if an x-ray is what your doc is having you get....so be it.
On the other hand, an MRI does show the conditions of tendons.

Yeah, she said that I had to start off with an xray for my insurance. If physical therapy doesn't start helping, then I'll push for an MRI.

If your insurance is good enough and you want an mri, research a good ortho and he'll order one pretty much that day. The only loss being your portion of your insurance.

Going into this year I signed up for the pricier insurance knowing I'd be going my ulna shortening + wanted an mri for clicking/weakness in my left shoulder.

    Re: Left Shoulder Pain

    XRay might help
I had one after 2 scans showed different things (one showed a complete tear, the other showed no tear ) Hence the XRay
I had had extreme pain for about 9 months and the shoulder froze making physio impossible
A cortisone shot worked for only 5 days

The XRay showed impingement and I had surgery for decompression of the accromium space and de encapsulation (basically cleaning up the frozen shoulder, which I think started with an inflamed bursa)
Surgery was successful and I was able to commence physio immediately

Try not to protect the shoulder too much as you don't want it to freeze. Until you know what's what do basic exercises like climbing up a wall with your fingers as high as you can go. And lean forward slightly, let the affected arm hang down and do circles, as big as you can go

Walking is good as it gets the blood flowing to the affected shoulder which aids healing

    Re: Left Shoulder Pain

Thank you everyone for your input. Alfrs, I have state level insurance, so I have to start wherever they start me, and I'd need a referral to an ortho doctor. I still have yet to go get my xray done, I just haven't been able to find the time.

Rainbowsrock, thank you! I appreciate your knowledge on the situation. It makes me feel better about the xray. I have found it increasingly more painfult to move my shoulder, or to rub it. I've got this knot on the spot that hurts the worst, and if I try to rub it or anything, it makes my whole entire arm ache. Eek.
