Fell down on shoulder in excruciating pain

My friend had a rotator cuff surgery a few years ago. Today as he fell on that shoulder he was in excruiating pain. Now he can't lift up his arm without feeling pain. He will see his orthopedic surgeon tomorrow, but is there anything he should be doing until then? Has anyone had this happen-if so, what needed to be done?
