    Possibilities of diagnosis?

I am currently at my university, so I have some time before I can get a professional diagnosis. I just want to see what opinions and/or advice someone can give me for the time being.
    Symptoms:
    - Sharp pain when raising right arm and sometimes during rest
    - Painful muscle (deltoid/bicep/tricep area, mostly) spasms and arm weakness after raising arm to perpendicular or higher
    - Inability to properly use arm/hand for 10-30 seconds after spasms begin

I have had these symptoms for a while now, maybe 1-2 years. It started around when I began powerlifting. The symptoms would only be noticeable after benching or squatting (I assume due to my shoulder position while squatting); However, it is getting more noticeable and severe just recently, despite not lifting weights for over eight months. I donít strain my arm on a daily basis, and my backpack isnít heavy, either. Just when I stretch my shoulder back or lift it above parallel to the ground it starts the spasms and is painful for some time after that.
I plan on seeing a specialist when I return to my hometown in May. I am just posting to see opinions so I can do more research and become better prepared to see the specialist.

    Thank you.

It sounds like a possible Rotator Cuff tear or strain. If you can pinpoint it, you can do some light PT until you can get to a doctor. The best thing is to stay away from lifting weights. Good luck!

    Re: Possibilities of diagnosis?

I thought I had a rotator cuff tear...actually I was pretty positive I did, but when I went to see an Ortho, they did xrays and some tests and dx me with shoulder bursitis.

I was given cortisone shots for the pain (helped immensely) and then PT to do for the shoulder. It also helped.

Hard to self dx something like this- but you could read up on shoulder bursitis and see if it sounds like a possibility.
