Exclamation Antero Superior Labral and Acromioclavicular joint

Dear All,

I wonder if anyone can tell me whether there is a direct structural link between the Antero Superior Labral and the AC joint?

I have sustained a trauma to the elbow some years ago and and MRI scan shortly thereafter demonstrated a tear to the ASL. Most recently, I have been advised thatthe MRI scan demonstrated pre-existing degenerative change in the AC joint and my doctors now think that is the cause of my ongoing pain.

They are suggesting arthroscopic subacromial decompression adn AC joint excision. They do not propose to do anything with the ASL. Is anyone able to tell me whether that procedure is likely to be anything to do with the trauma or whether it is related to my constitutional degenerative change?

Many thanks in advance.

Re: Antero Superior Labral and Acromioclavicular joint

Welcome Ralph, The AC joint can only give you pain in the exact area of the joint. But rarely, if it has any enlarged portions they may irritate the soft tissues under the joint and give you some deltoid and upper arm pain. If the Doc thinks it is only AC joint pain get him to inject the AC with painkiller and steroid and see if relief is given. Thinking about the anatomy I dont think there should be a relationship between the AC and
the anterior superior labral area, it is somewhat anterior and where a head of the biceps originates. I would try the shot firtst.
