    Dexa Report - Ward's Triange

This most recent DEXA Scan was done on a different machine than before. There is a category for Ward's Triange and the results are -3.2 which I know is bad but I don't understand where the measurement was taken, and why it's so much worse of a T score than my lumbar at -2.6 and left hip -1.8. Can any one explain this to me? I'm not seeing my doctor until Friday and I'm worrying about this score. Thanks

Have you tried a ****** search on Ward's Triangle? My DEXA done at Mayo Clinic also mentioned the Ward's Triangle and I too wondered what it was and did such a search. I just don't remember the answers now. But you can find the answer thru a ****** search as I did.

Here is a question and answer regarding just what Ward's triangle is that should ease your worries some between now and your appointment tomorrow.

According to the medical dictionary, Wards Triangle is an area of diminished density in the trabecular pattern of the neck of the femur evident by xray as well as direct inspection....trabecula is a transverse partition which divides or partly dvides a cavity. I'm assuming this means a cross section of the neck of the femur, like if you cut a slice across the bone and can see how thick the bone is. Let us know what the Dr. says it is.

Re: Dexa Report - Ward's Triange

I went to see the doctor today--ward's triange looks at the strength of the bone and the film is taken from a side view rather than anterior-posterior. I'm not sure I totally understand it but the surface bone isn't that strong like the inside bone abd the film shows of the bone there (hip area) what the reading is for the strongest type of bone. The example he gave is that the Forteo could grow bone back and fill in the gaps/holes but if the bone that grew back isn't the strong type bone then wards triange T score will still be in the minus and your fracture risk will still be high. Whew. I hope you can understand all this.

I think I at least grasp some of what you're saying. In fact, it kinda helps me understand what my Endocrinologist is up to in insisting that we treat with vitamin D for osteomalacia before we start Forteo for the osteoporosis. A little bit anyway. Maybe.

Thank you for responding and giving us the low down from your doctor.

Re: Dexa Report - Ward's Triange

    Hey Thin Bones,
I too was wondering what the wards triangle meant, I asked the question awhile back and no one answered. Mine was -3.25 and it scared me. I went to the doctor yesterday and she explained what exactly the wards triangle was. If you look on a skeleton drawing it is near the hip socket. She said very rarely did a fracture occur in that area, it was just another guide in bone loss scoring, most scores will be high in that area and I wasnt to worry about that score. the most important are the T-scores. I hope this helps, it put my mind at ease, My t-scores didnt seem so awful after that.

please pay no attention to Wards triangle. It is now not used in DXA assessments. The International Society for Clinical Densitometry advises all MDs to ignore it. There is a move to remove it from the software programs.
