lump on thigh and back pain, please help.

I have had a soft large mass ( approx 5" long, 4" wide) on my upper left thigh for about 18 months, when I first discovered it, it was quite painful and discoloured but not like a bruise, it seemed very veiny.
I had not banged or injured myself, it just seemed to appear.
I went to doctor who after first saying that I must have one fat thigh (i weigh around 130 pounds) eventually sent me for a M.R.I scan.
The results came back and showed up as a large white growth that the specialist said was a tumour, I was asked to go back 2 weeks later and when I did he said it wasn't a tumour after all, just an 'odema'
i never heard anything again untill I recently went back to doctors regarding something else and they asked me about it.
It is still there but only painful to the touch or when I am cold my leg aches in that area.
They have referred me back to another hospital and I am now waiting for another appointment.
The thing is because of the last experience I am wary of believing what they are going to say this time.
The other worry I now have is that for about a month I have had severe back and shoulder pain, and some discomfort swallowing food.
The doctor has said it could be an infection in my esophagus or a more concerningly a cancer of the gullet, he has done blood tests which I am now waiting for results. He does think cancer is unlikely though as I am only 35 and not in the age bracket common for this type.

I am worried sick that the lump is a malignant tumour which has been ignored and now this possible esophagus problem is a secondary cancer.
Any advice would be a great help.

Re: lump on thigh and back pain, please help.

    Flamegirl,

I think that you reponded to my posts about a leg tumor...I went to a surgeon last week and am scheduled for an MRI today...YUK...he stated that it is either 1 of 2 things...a lipoma which I believe that JenniferB123 said that it was most likely or a very ugly aggressive tumor that woman (especially in my age bracket 36 years old) more than men get ... he told me that I shouldn't worry or loose any sleep over it...and I am not. I have decided to just let it be what it is and if it is something, then I have complete faith in GOD that he will direct my path. You know that my regular doctor was very mad that I went to a surgeon and even put on the referral that he did not order for me to go to a surgeon, I really don't care anymore, because this is my body and I know and have control to make my own decisions and not worry about what my doctor or anyone else thinks. We must take control of our own health and not trust soley in doctors. They are not infalable and they make mistakes all the time...

Flamegirl, I took it upon myself to go to a surgeon and find out what was the deal with what I have good or bad. I think that you should get your films and go to a surgeon or another specialist. If that is what makes you feel better, then I say DO IT! You have the right to know what is going on with your body...

Hope that you find comfort soon and that you will find the answers that you are looking for.

    Becca

    Thanks Becca,
I have put this post on a few forums now because hopefully someone will recognise things like you did and have an answer for me.
I really don't feel like I can trust doctors anymore as you had the same experience with the misdiagnosis as me, you will understand.

What name did he give to your possible aggressive tumour?

As I said I'm freaking now because of this gullet and back problem.
The thought of secondary cancer is scaring me more than the original lump ever did....

Keep me informed with how you are doing.

I have got my appointment for my follow up on the lump for 14th April and my bloods will be back next tuesday 29th march. So I might know more then.

Do you have any idea whether cancer would show in the blood results.
I am not sure what tests he did but there were quite a few.

    Keep smiling

    Flamegirl,

NO he did not give me the name of the tumor and to be quite honest, I didn't ask him either. I would rather not get upset and worry or even look on the internet because I would freak myself out.

As for your back pain...I have been having severe lower back pain for the last couple of weeks myself, but I don't think that it has anything to do with my leg at all.

What is a gullet? You are not in the states right? UK?

Please try to calm yourself down and think about the positive, which is very hard for me...I am a complete pesamist! ( i didn't even spell that one right) so I tend to worry about EVERYTHING!!!! and I am not going to let it consume me right now...it's too early to start doing that...and I think that it is just lipomas and if that is the case, then they will liposuction it out...it is rather large and unattractive right now...

Yes there are certain cancers that can be detected with blood samples, but again that is way to premature right now...

    Keep your chin up...

    Becca

    Becca

    You are absolutly right..
I am going to switch off worrying and if its bad then so be it, freaking beforehand isn't going to make it go away.

Normally I don't tend to worry about health, if I feel low I just make a point to eat much healthier that day and that normally does the trick, but this has got me so worked up.

Anyway I will take your advice and just wait till next tuesday, if it is bad then I will cross that bridge then.

Thanks for the level headed advice

By the way a gullet is another term for esophageus, I think.....

Re: lump on thigh and back pain, please help.

what about other "cancer" symptoms? like blood in your urine, chronic caughing [not do to cold infection] memory loss, depression ect. just to name a few. My heart goes out to you. I think our countries medical care is a 'malignant metastasized' mess! TAKE THE LEAD and learn as much as you can from the far east to the west and in between. I know for a fact most of the fear your having was the after effects of your doctors appointment. He or she is in a powerful money making risky dreadful position and thier first concern is #1 and the rule is... cover your ***, [lawsuits] how are you paying for treatment? what insurance do have? ect. that doctor isnt going to see you as a patient or a real person in real pain and fear until all that secures HIM OR HER position first. SO THEY SAY IT COULD BE....................! AND YOU LEAVE WITH MORE QUESTIONS THEN YOU CAME WITH. STILL IN PAIN, but now the feeling of impending doomed creeps in. CAN YOU TRUST IN HAVING THE BEST CARE AVALIBLE WITH YOUR BEST INTEREST IN MIND ARE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY GOING TO BE INFORMED AND INCLUED? IS QUALITY OF LIFE IMPORTANT ENOUGH TO ADVISE YOU OF ALL THE POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS AND HOW TO MANAGE YOUR HEALTH IN TREATMENT! THE FEAR OF CANCER IS A WALK IN THE PARK COMPARED TO THE FEARS THAT INFECT A PERSON WITH OUT EVEN BEING AWARE OF WHERE IT CAME FROM. I beleive life is etnernal within dementions this life is part of these dementions and when its our time here let it go and live again in a higher developed demention beyond word or thought
