Found out what my Iron level is

I went to the doctor today, and my iron level is 15. She said the normal levels are 35-100. I am taking 3 iron pills a day. I feel a little better on the iron, but I could still sleep all day on my days off from work. I am grateful for this web site, I have learned a lot from everyone. I have one quick question-how long will it take to get my iron levels back up?

Thank you in advance for anyone's answer. Hope everyone has a good rest of the week, I look forward to hearing from some of you about my quick question.

    Hi flmom38,
to your question as to how long it will take. Well it could take months before you see any change in your energy level especially if you are taking oral iron. Did the you get your hemoglobin count? Have you found out the cause of your low ferritin level? From what I have been dealing with for the past year and a half and 5 iron IV later, my level still can not be maintain anything above 49. The quickest way to get iron is by IV and several before you level are in the normal range. I had an IV in May and will get another round in a week, this will be my fifth. Taking a nap is not so bad. I would suggest that you get copies of all your lab work, and if you have not gotten a complete blood work up, you should ask for one from your doctor.

Hi flmom, I know what you're dealing with because I'm going through the same thing. I have been receiving the IV iron now weekly for the past 9 weeks. My hemoglobin was at 6.9 and now it's 10.4-much better, but still not where they like it to be. The nurse told me yesterday that I'll probably have to get at least 3 more and then come in every month to get a bag. They like to see Hgb at at least 12. Do you see a hematologist? It wasn't until my primary doctor referred me to the hematologist that I got some good answers. It seems that some people just don't absorb iron well for a variety of reasons, and I'm one of them. I took the oral iron 3 times a day for over a year and my iron level didn't move. By the time I saw the specialist I had zero iron stores left in my bone marrow(but everyone is different).Believe me,I know all about the naps too. It's hard when you have to work, drive the kids, clean the house, etc. Good Luck! This is a good board to come to too.

Re: Found out what my Iron level is

Earlier this year my iron level was 19 I am usually around 25-29 but at 19 my hair started to fall out. I took ferro-grad and 2 months later my hair stopped falling and my level was at 31. My doctor seemed happy with this level. However my hair is not regrowing so I am taking iron again. My doctor suggested I take iron for 4 months. I guess it depends on how low you are. You will need to keep an eye on the level. Too much is also bad

On the hair thing. I had that problem too. I started taking Biotin. In the US you can get it at any Super Walmart. I am sure health stores would have it too. It is a vitamin that has something to do with the way the hair grows as long as you have the follicles to grow the hair with. Anyway. When I took it, my hair thickened and grew back in places that it was falling out. I don't know if it would work for everyone and you would also need to check with the hemo to make sure that there was no reason that you could not take it.

Re: Found out what my Iron level is

I have chronic anaemia due to heavy bowel bleeds and also ive a disease which depletes ferritin stores(i have psoriatic arthritis for those who know it) i was taking oral iron 3 times a day and after a month my levels Hgb were 7.6 and feritin 8 so it wasnt workin very well so since july im on 100mg iron sulphate twice a week via injection(pain in *** literally ) but they have recently told me my level increases are stopping so they dont expect ill ever not be anamic but are hoping to keep my Hgb up to at least 10 and my ferritin to stay up in double figures and possibly in and around 20, I know this is low and often people experience terrible effects at these levels but i feel alot better than before my iron injections still terriblt tierd but can walk about with out getting severe cramps or getting dizzy and out of breath.
Taking or speak to your doctor about taking folic acid as a supplement as this does have an impact on cell renewal also avoid caffeine especially around times of your doses.
It takes a little while but stick with it love and it will improve slowly but surely hope this helps please let me know how u get on
    take care chell xxx
