Vitamins, vitamin drinks, adrenal support pills? Any advice please

My neighbor has liver cancer and with the chemo she's taking some vitamin drink to help keep her energy up. I've been looking around for something potent and helpful for addison's and wonder if any of you take anything?

I've seen something called Raw Adrenal, Adrenal Support Plus, and a few others out there that boast that they specifically help the adrenal glands.. I'd love to get some opinions on any of this from someone that has experience.

I want desperately to help myself as much as possible, cortef is one thing, but I think there is other ways that I can help myself. Please give some advice.

Have you tried DHEA? It has made quite a difference for me! From the moment I took the first pill (25mg), I had so much energy I was irritable. Next time I took just 12.5mg and noticed an increase in mood and energy without the irritation. I now take 12.5mg twice a day unless I am exercising, where I take the whole 25mg just before the work out.

I also take 2000mg of Vitamin C twice a day, calcium twice a day, a superB vitamin, and Vitamin D once a day. Also, I take 1 Betaine HCL with meals to help digest food. All that, coupled with my morning chicken broth, and I feel quite well!

Does that help? I bet you will get a lot of different responses...I hope you find something that works for you!

    Blessings to you

Wonderful response.. I think I'll try this then

If I take two a day that is 13mg of DHEA plus the vitamin concentration that supposedly is geared towards our problem.

    Hi Maryann,

You are taking DHEA and are a female. How long have you been taking it? I have been told by my Dr. about it but am scared to try it for fear of the male hormone in it. My hormones levels are both very low so what happens when I have male and not female ones? Now won't that surprise my husband.
Have you experienced any negative side effects? I would love to hear anything you can share about it and what it did help you with.
    Thank you so much.
    Diane

    Hi Chris,
I've been taking a glandular adrenal supplement for over a year and it has helped me greatly. I'm in Canada and i don't know if they sell my brand in the US, but I imagine you can get something as good there. Some of these glandular are from the porcine (pig) adrenal and some are from the bovine (cow). It's more than just taking a supplement though. You need to stick to a low-carb diet (no white sugar, no white flour, no caffeine, etc.) as well as get to bed by 10 p.m. (sleep is vital to adrenals) and get some good low-impact exercise each day.

Diane - I have not noticed anything different in the facial hair production after taking DHEA that wasn't already enhanced by the steroids. I pluck my own eyebrows, and since the steroids I have to keep up with it quite a bit! Otherwise, it has really helped me to feel back to normal. I have been taking it for about 2 1/2 months now. The DHEA has helped so much that I am getting back to exercising, which I haven't done in 3-4 years! I started taking it after reading about several studies done in the UK and Australia regarding DHEA and adrenal insufficient patients. Every single person who took it had a renewed sense of stamina and decreased feelings of depression. DHEA also has immune boosting properties, which are very beneficial to us! The drawbacks are that they have no way of telling what the long term effects are, as rats don't naturally produce DHEA, which make the test results on them difficult to interpret. I am willing to chance what it may cause down the road since it makes me feel so great now.

Chris - Men actually can take more DHEA than women, so you may want to take that into consideration when you test to see it's effects on you. I certainly hope it will help you as it has me.

Cossette - I noticed that you have a more naturopathic approach to your adrenal insufficiency. Have you actually been diagnosed by someone non-naturopathic as having AD and had the lab tests to confirm? I am not by any means questioning whether you have it, I am just curious because of the following questions I have for you. Are you on steriods at all? How do you respond to illness with this naturopathic approach?
Before I was diagnosed and still in the searching stage, I found that keeping away from sugar, flour, and caffeine kept my symptoms at bay, so of course I obstained from those things. I still didn't feel tip top, but I was a little better. Actually, I was well enough to go on my dream trip to England for 2 weeks, but I was extremely careful to keep from stressing and tried to keep healthy by downing lots of Vitamin C, fish oil, and the betaine for digestion. I often wonder how long I could have done this before I would get seriously sick. Now, after 9 months of meds (and feeling a lot better) I realize just how unwell I had allowed myself to become. I am glad that I take the steriods now, even though I still worry about the side effects. Do you feel pretty well with your natural approach?

I hope it is OK to post like this. Do people or the website prefer that I have a seperate entry for each person we address, or is this OK?

    Here's to feeling better!

MaryAnn, how have you been doing? Haven't conversed with you in a while. I took the preg. for a month but the Endo didn't feel that it improved my symptoms enough, and the new no sugar, no flour, no rice, no noodle, no ECT. diet caused me to lose too much weight. so I started taking the Cortef last Friday, and he gave me a prescription for compunded DHEA, but I haven't gotten it filled yet. I am going to do that today, do you use compounded or OTC? How is everything in WA? I am coming up next month, it's been a year and I am homesick!!! I am glad to hear that someone actually feels better taking meds, 2 weeks in England sound really cool! I just want to have the energy to make the 5 hour plane ride to SeaTac!! And then the 2 hour drive to Whidbey, just give me that and I'll be happy!! Hope you have a great weekend, Sarah

    Hi Sarah!
I'm glad to hear that you are on the Cortef, though I hope it doesn't complicate things with Lyme's Disease. Are you doing better on it, or is it too soon to tell? I take OTC DHEA. I didn't know there is prescription DHEA. I wonder if it is better, and how it would be? Is the dosing different, I wonder? I'm sorry the diet didn't work for you. It was pretty hard to find enough things to eat on that diet. I added breads and a little sugar back to my diet after I was diagnosed and on meds. But now I am gaining weight (the only drawback to all this), so I may go back on the diet again. I really hope you get to feeling better soon!
So you are coming up north are ya? I do hope you have a wonderful trip and that you don't get too tired out. Will you be taking your little one(s)?
My trip to England was wonderful, an unforgettable experience! I did get sick while there and felt pretty crummy for a few days, I didn't let it stop me!

curiousleo - I just picked up a bottle of DHEA at Costco, made by Schiff Nutrition Group. I really didn't research what brand would be best, ect, as I sometimes do. I guess I didn't think it was going to work, so I thought, "Oh, let's just give it a try." But I noticed the effects immediately.

    Blessings to you guys!

MaryAnn, sorry I called you Diane in my post. I guess I had a Lyme brain moment. But at least you knew who I was refering to. I changed it on the post. I don't really feel any different on the cortef yet. How long did it take you? I started the DHEA yesterday, it gives me a headache about 15 minutes after I take it. But then I am OK. I don't know what effect it will have on the Lyme. We are not suppose to take steriods, but, at this point I'm gonna end up losing all adrenal function if I don't take the Cortef. I had the DHEA made at a compounding pharmacy, I read that it is safer this way, since it is regulated, and you know that you are getting 100% DHEA and no additives. where the OTC brands are not. It cost $28.00 for 100, which isn't bad. They are 5mg each. Has the DHEA made you gain weight? I am under weight and need to gain. I eat alot, but don't gain weight, since I went on the no sugar, no flour, no etc diet I lost more weight. I am hoping that the DHEA will help that.
As for coming up, I am bringing my 14 year old son with me, and then he is flying to Maui from Seattle (lucky him) his Dad just moved from Vancouver to Maui, so now I have to send him there instead of Washington. I won't send him from Houston because of the change of planes at LAX, that airport is too big. I would be way to nervous having him wondering around LAX for several hours. He is too old to have a flight attendant guide, they stop that at age 12. He has switched planes by himself at other airports, Dallas, ALB, phoenix, but not through LAX. when we switched planes there last summer we had to get on a bus and go across the tarmac to a different terminal, and then walk along way, I would be going crazy with him there by himself. He says he would be fine, but I just don't trust other people. I hope that you are havinga good weekend, and here is some more Texas sun Sarah

    Hello Sarah!

Don't worry about the name thing - I knew who you meant! The Cortef is what is making me gain weight, which is a sore spot for me! The DHEA hasn't, but it really does make me feel the closest to normal that I have felt in years!

How is the Cortef and DHEA doing for you now? Are you feeling remotely better? I sure hope so! And I hope your son got off to Hawaii OK!

Take care on your trip. I always have to take more steriods when travelling. I never thought of travel as being stressful, but I have seen firsthand how I don't tolerate it well. I hope it goes well for you, Sarah!

    Blessing to you, the ever-too-busy-at-times,
    MaryAnn
