Which Igenex test should be ordered?

    Hi all -

More questions! My Igenex kit arrived today and after reading thru all of the enclosures, I'm puzzled. My internist is kindly going to order the test(s) I want, but I need to know what to suggest to her.

I'm hopeful that the tick bite from late May that gave me the bulls-eye rash is the only Lyme tick bite I've had so I can "nip it in the bud" to quote Barney Fife! Actually, I've had 2 other tick bites that I know of in the last year, but neither had a rash. I've had no intrusive systemic symptoms, but also have lupus and have some aches and pains from that. Fortunately, the lupus is fairly quiet.

Which Igenex test series do you suppose I need?
Basic Lyme test (Western Blot IgG, Western Blot IgM, Lyme IFA)
Complete Lyme Panel (same as Basic plus Lyme PCR)
Initial Lyme Panel (Western Blot IgG, Western Blot IgM, Lyme PCR)
Regional Co-Infection Panel for my area
    Babesia Panel

    All insights appreciated! Thanks!

    Barbara

Hi Barbara. Remember that a bulls-eye rash is a definite sign of Lyme disease. The rash alone merits treatment.

What state are you in? Certain areas have more specific testing. At the least, I suggest doing initial Lyme paenl and co-infection testing for your area. I would first ensure that the co-infection panel includes tests for Babesiosis, both types of Ehrlichiosis (HME & HGE), and Bartonella.

    Hi Ticker,

I'm in Virginia, about 90 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, and geographically it's considered the Atlantic corridor.

No insurance, so all of that is $$ - but less costly than undiagnosed bacteria and the havoc that could cause, I'm sure.

    Any additional ideas?

    Thanks! Barbara

Barbara are you taking plaquenil for your Lupus? If so this is a good thing, because it is also used to treat the cyst-form of Lyme. so you would have a head start and may not end up with as many bad symptoms if you were already on the palquenil when you contracted Lyme. If not it would benefit the Lupus and the Lyme at the same time to be on it. sarah

Re: Which Igenex test should be ordered?

    Hi Sarah,

Thanks for that bit of helpful information! I have been off Plaquenil for a variety of reasons, but the lupus has been quiet anyway. Blood work last week showed my sed rate normal and my ANA was just 1:80. Go figure, not that I'd rather it be a bother, mind you!

Since according to the labs, my lupus is "well controled", I'm not sure my internist wil be comfortable with giving me an Rx for Plaquenil right now. She's in the process of referring me to a rheumy for the lupus. The Lyme tick bite was an uninvited problem!

    Thanks again - Barbara

Hi Barbara, believe me Lyme is always uninvited!

Just for your information, sometimes people who have Lyme have a positive ANA. I had this before. So if it is positive, it may be related to the Lyme.

    Hi Ticker -

Well, that's interesting, too. My ANA has been positive since 1999 when I was dxed with lupus. At that time my sed rate was more than twice the norm and I had a lupus type rash on my arms, along with swelling lower joints from an unexpected allergic reaction to Celebrex. Up until them I'd had no know allergies.

I've become sadly aware that the bulls-eye rash is diagnostic for Lyme, but the bullet I'm hoping to dodge is chronic Lyme. Finger crossed and downing that Doxy!!

    Thanks again - Barbara

Re: Which Igenex test should be ordered?

    Hi -

Well, my blood in it's Igenex kit and paperwork (and payment ) are all en route to Palo Alto!!! I went to a hospital lab, $5 "draw charge", and they were very familiar with what to do - I asked and they answered correctly according to what I'd read and what someone from Igenex told me on the phone.

I chose to get the Initial Lyme Panel and the Complete Co-Infection Panel. Hope that was a wise choice. Fingers crossed it's negative! How long does it take to get the results back?

    Cheers! Barbara

Hi Barbara. You are one step closer to getting answers!

It sounds like you chose good tests. It can take about three weeks to get the results.

    Hang in there okay?

Re: Which Igenex test should be ordered?

    Thanks Ticker -

I'm going to call the lab just to confirm that they did send the blood-work yesterday since I was there late in the afternoon and they had to centrifuge the tubes before sending them. I didn't want the all-important last day to mail it 2 day FedEx - Wednesday - to slip by!

I'll try to hang in! Today seems to be another teary day and that's a bother.

Thanks again for the info and the encouragement! Barbara
