Can adrenal problems cause high testosterone in women?

Hi everyone. Can adrenal problems cause high testosterone in women?

My testosterone is high. I have had an ultrasound, and I do not have ovarian cysts.

I do have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and take Armour Thyroid.

What symptoms would indicate an adernal problem, and what tests do you recommend?

    Thank you!

    Hi,

I don't really have a lot of answers for you but yes, adrenal problems can cause high testosterone. I'm going through a similar thing...have high testosterone levels and my endocrinologist suspects an adrenal problem. I too had an ultrasound of the ovaries...it was normal, so nothing wrong there. I think my endo is going to do a ct scan of the adrenal. Someone on another board suggested to me that high testosterone could mean an adrenal tumor That's kind of scary but hopefully that's not the case!

Maybe someone else can give you a little more info

    Best of luck to you

    Thanks for your reply melody!

I recently had the CT scan done of the adrenals, and thankfully it was fine. I hope yours will be fine also. It is good to check just in case.

Do you also have a thyroid disorder? I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (a type of hypothyroidism) and I believe some women who are hypothyroid can have high testosterone.

Are you going to do the adrenal saliva test? I am considering this next.

Re: Can adrenal problems cause high testosterone in women?

    Hi again

I'm not sure if I have a thyroid problem, but it's definitely possible. My endo mentioned testing my thyroid. I'm still waiting for the results of my bloodwork to come back. I think the main thing they're testing is my cortisol level. Then I suppose whatever the tests show, we'll go from there.

I don't know much about hypothyroidism. What are the symptoms of it? The main problems I've been having (other than the high testosterone levels) are irregular periods, annoying facial hair, high blood pressure, fatigue, and dizziness (like when I get hungry). Do you have any of these symptoms as well? In addition to high testosterone, I have elevated DHEA levels too.

Haven't heard of the adrenal saliva test...seems like all they want to do is stick me with needles

Hope things go well for you...keep me updated!

I have high testosterone levels for my age (64) also but didn't know why. I also have Hashimotos & depleted adrenals. Thanks.

Hi melody. Hypothyroidism can cause a lot of symptoms. Below is a list, you can have any combination of symptoms.

____ I am gaining weight inappropriately
____ I'm unable to lose weight with diet/exercise
____ I am constipated, sometimes severely
____ I have hypothermia/low body temperature (I feel cold when others feel hot, I need extra sweaters, etc.)
    ____ I feel fatigued, exhausted
____ Feeling run down, sluggish, lethargic
____ My hair is coarse and dry, breaking, brittle, falling out
____ My skin is coarse, dry, scaly, and thick
____ I have a hoarse or gravely voice
____ I have puffiness and swelling around the eyes and face
____ I have pains, aches in joints, hands and feet
____ I have developed carpal-tunnel syndrome, or it's getting worse
____ I am having irregular menstrual cycles (longer, or heavier, or more frequent)
____ I am having trouble conceiving a baby
    ____ I feel depressed
    ____ I feel restless
    ____ My moods change easily
____ I have feelings of worthlessness
    ____ I have difficulty concentrating
____ I have more feelings of sadness
____ I seem to be losing interest in normal daily activities
    ____ I'm more forgetful lately

I also have the following additional symptoms, which have been reported more frequently in people with hypothyroidism:

____ My hair is falling out
    ____ I can't seem to remember things
____ I have no sex drive
____ I am getting more frequent infections, that last longer
    ____ I'm snoring more lately
    ____ I have/may have sleep apnea
____ I feel shortness of breath and tightness in the chest
____ I feel the need to yawn to get oxygen
____ My eyes feel gritty and dry
____ My eyes feel sensitive to light
____ My eyes get jumpy/tics in eyes, which makes me dizzy/vertigo and have headaches
____ I have strange feelings in neck or throat
____ I have tinnitus (ringing in ears)
____ I get recurrent sinus infections
    ____ I have vertigo
    ____ I feel some lightheadedness
____ I have severe menstrual cramps

Regarding thyroid tests, it is important to have your Free T3, Free T4 (besides the T3 and T4) and thyroid antibodies tested in addition to the normal panel. They are not usually done but are necessary for a comprehensive view. Some people who have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (a type of hypothyroidism) have normal results but elevated antibodies. In this case, treatment is warranted.

Get copies of your results. The people on the thyroid board on this site are great, and they can help you interpret them.

My periods are not irregular, but they are heavy. As my thyroid meds are getting increased, they are getting a little better. I definitely have fatigue. When I get hungry, it seems extreme to me. It is like all of a sudden I am suddenly starving and I get woozy. I have had my blood sugar checked. I don't think I have had my DHEA checked.

I am trying to learn about adrenal fatigue. It seems it and thyroid disorders often go hand in hand. I have heard that the saliva test is the best, but I don't know if that is true.

I hope you get answers too. Let's keep each other updated!

Re: Can adrenal problems cause high testosterone in women?

Hi Sammi2, thanks for your reply.

Are you getting treated for your adrenal problem? What symptoms do you attribute to that? What tests do you think are best?

I am trying to figure out if I have an adrenal problem in addition to the Hashimoto's. As you know, it is hard to tell what symptoms are from what!

I think there must be a correlation between high testosterone and women with thyroid and/or adrenal problems. I wonder if the level will normalize when these diseases are treated optimally.

Re: Can adrenal problems cause high testosterone in women?

Hi Ticker, I don't know which test is better but I had saliva testing done. I am taking adrenal rebuilder but not happy about taking products made from
animals. I have ordered an adrenal supplement from organic bovine hoping there is less chance of mad cow disease if it is from organic. I am trying to avoid taking cortisol because of side effects. It's hard to know what is best.
    Good luck!

Hi Sammi2. I hope the supplement works for you.

I am thinking of doing the saliva test. I have heard it is about $140.00. Do you know if this is true?

    Hey Ticker,

Thanks for the info. I do have some of those symptoms as well so I'll have to look into that. As far as the blood tests go, it says on my lab sheet that they are checking my T3 free and free T4 (plus a bunch of other stuff lol).
