    add meds/upset stomach

My dd has a terrible time with upset stomach with add meds. She does have a sensitive stomach and is not a big breakfast eater. On some, she has thrown up 30 mins later. Others she has felt like she was going to to for the most part of the day. Also, they often make her extremely tired.

Do any of you have any tips for this problem? Anyone else's child tired?

    Re: add meds/upset stomach

Vomiting, diarrhoea and cramps are fairly common stimulant (Ritalin, Adderall, etc) side effects.

Too high of a dose may appear as tiredness. Does daughter fall asleep because of her ADHD meds? If not suspect the dose is too high or the delivery system is ineffective.

If I were to take 60mg methylphenidate IR, shortly after I would appear very tired but in fact am experiencing the so-called zombie effect produced by overfocus. Whereas even 70mg of methylphenidate in a extended release formula such as Concerta does not affect me that way. But even an extended release formula can produce the appearance of tiredness if the dose is too high.

Med management (drug, dose, delivery) of ADHD symptoms is very unique to each individual. Children are often unable to explain their reaction. Doctors depend on parents for feedback.

Is she on Strattera??? If so, give it to her at bedtime to minimize the upset stomach and fatigue.

Look into probiotic or Activia (yogurt).
It may make her feel better.

    Re: add meds/upset stomach

    hi....

what kind of add drug is she on?
is she on strattera or an amphetamine?

if its strattera then tiredness is definetly a side effect...when i was on it my doc told me to take it at night before bed at a regular time...that really helped...

as well...if its amphetamine, upset stomach is the norm. i feel quite nauseous for the first few hours and have intense diareha and cramping. what i find helps me (im on adderall, and was on dexedrine for a long time) is that i set my alarm and take the pill an hour before i wake up, with a big glass of water and a piece of toast (i know it sounds wierd, but i keep them by my bedside table and prepare them the night before), then i go back to sleep for an hour. by the time i get out of bed, i feel much more rested and relaxed and I have to go to the bathroom, but its not so painful.

in general, eating about half hour before taking the pill will help with upset stomach problems, but eating very very small portions. and drinking water in sips helps with cramping.
also, maybe the dose is too high...how old is your daughter?
im 22 and have been on and off adhd drugs since i was 12...

    Re: add meds/upset stomach

Thank you so much for responding. I do feel like I am the voice for my dd as she tires to explain what she is feeling. And most of the time, it really helps to talk with other parents or adult ADD'ers to see if I am describing it right.

She is not on Strattera. It was by far, the worse med she has been on for ADD. She actually was sick on a daily basis.

She tried 30 mgs of Vaylanse on Sat and Sun. She was zombie and so dead tired. I felt so bad for her. She was miserable. 30 mgs is the min. dosage.

Perhaps over medicating is the problem because each and every one of them has always caused her to be very tired. What do you think?

I am so at the end of my rope with the whole med. thing. She is beyond the rope. Yesterday, the Dr. started her on GERD meds. for the stomach upset, etc...Maybe by the week we will see if that helps some of the stomach upset.

But will it help with taking ADD meds?

    Gerd and ADD?
She have chronic sinus issues allergies?
    Always in a haze?
Can not stay awake in a car for rides longer than an hour?
Wake up in the middle of the night?
    Mouth breathe?
    Snore?
Still have her tonsils and adnoids?

Now I am really questioning diagnosis as well as dosage. 2 out of 100 children have sleep apnea. 1 in 5000 are diagnosed. Gerd is common in sleep apnea sufferers... really common.

    Sincerely,
    MG

    no sinus or allergy

never seems to go into a "deep" sleep. Remembers very vivid dreams each morning.

No snoring. Dad has sleep apnea. Have not seen it in her.

Tonsils and adnords still in tact.

Blood work fully checked and rechecked on Monday and everything shows up fine.

    Still very tired

    Re: add meds/upset stomach

She has the hereditary predisposition given her dad's apnea.. snoring is not necessary, mouth breathing is very common. Lack of deep sleep and the fatigue is making me think it would be worth a consultation with a sleep specialist just in case. Maybe the same one your husband sees.. that way the medical history is evident. In some cases it is not the tonsils but an elongated pallet causing the obstruction.. then there is good ole hypopnea.. shallow breathing where the person has too low blood O2 during sleep to promote deeper sleep and restorative sleep as a result. I have severe obstructive sleep apnea, my husband has hypopne based mild sleep apnea.. my son (almost 5) has severe sleep apnea (obstructive (20 events) and hypopnea (10 events) based) stops breathing 30x an hour with out his CPAP.

My son was not a big snorer.. but has been a mouth breather since birth.. I wasn't a snorer either.. I just did the strangle choke wake thing. My husband can shake the rough with his snoring.

I hope you find the answer soon. There is nothing worse than worrying over your child.

    Sincerely,
    MG

    Re: add meds/upset stomach

hi are you still checking this message board...

yes strattera is a brutal drug...did you know it was intially used as an antidepressant but was pulled off the market b/c of the high risk of suicide for those who were on it....i was very tired and dizzy and incapacitated the first few weeks until my dose lowered in half, then i could function but it had no add effect...

it sounds like she is overdosing unintentionally...everyone has different nervous systems for example very low doses like im talking 5-10 mg of adderall hits me quite hard ....if i was you i would cut her dose in half of whatever she is taking on your own and just see how it goes...what i do...is if its in capsule form, i open the capsule and pour out about half of the contents then put the capsule back together or i cut the pills in half...see if she responds better to smaller amounts....

personally, i dont believe drugs as strong as add drugs should be prescribed to ppl under the age of 16...physically and mentally too harsh on the system....

also, it sounds ludicrous that she would be put on a drug to help her stomach when her stomach problems were the result of meds in the first place. my stomach is permantnly screwed up and my doc told me to wait until i was of meds for good to recieve treatment for IBS.

also, the zombie effect you described is CLASSIC OVERDOSE....and utter exhaustion...poor girl i completley understand how shes feeling. has she complained of any other symptoms?

    Re: add meds/upset stomach

She has always had a very sensitive stomach. All summer she was medication free and she still complained of stomach aches and off and on feelings of nausea. She has now taken the GERD meds for 5 days and she says that she is already feeling better. I feel extremely confident that the GERD diagnosis is correct.

We only tried Strattera and Vayanese for a few days. Once the zombie or constant sick stomach starts...we are done with that one. I agree with you that they are too strong. I have asked the Dr before about using half of the capsules. He has always said no way. We go back next week and put our minds together once again.
