    complex hyperplasia with atypia

Hi My name is Tammi and I'm 30 years old. My Husband and I have been trying to conceive for quite a while now. I went to the doctor to find out that I had PCOS and that my lining of my uterus was kind of thick. Well I have never had a normal period so the doctor put me on Provera to start a period then clomid. This didn't work. I bled for a week then quit but started back and bled so bad that I passed out 3 times and was taken to the hospital where they had to give me 2 units of blood. They did vaginal ultrasounds and said that my lining was now normal and let me go home. The bleeding stopped while in the hospital over night. I was told to stay home and keep my feet up. I started bleeding again a week later and ended up going back to the hospital where they admitted me again and gave me 2 more units of blood. I went to my OBGYN and she said we needed to do a D & C. She sent it off and it came back as being complex hyperplasia with atypia and she said that I had one area that looked to be a well differentiated form of adenocarcinoma. This terrified me. She sent me to a specialist who told me that it wasn't cancer but that it was very close to being cancer. He said that if I was wanting to get pregnant that I needed to take the provera 10mg 3 times a day for days 15 thru 30 of every month for 6 months. He said that we would do another D & C in 3 months to see how things were and then another one 3 months after that. He said that during this time I had to lose weight. He said that my weight could make it turn into cancer. He said that I was at a very high risk of it being cancer. He also said that if he did a hysterectomy today that there was a 40 % chance it could be cancer. I'm really scared. He said that if I had lost the weight when I come back in June that they would take me off the provera and let me try to take fertility medicine to get pregnant. But that if anything started looking bad I would have to have the hysterectomy right away and if I do get pregnant then the hysterectomy after having the baby. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? If so please let me know how things went. I really don't know what to do. I'm worried.

    Thanks
    Tammi

    Hi Tammi,

I happen to be on the boards main page and was scrolling down when I seen this and just had to reply to you.

I was diagnosed with complex hyperplasia with atypia in August 2006. I was told it was a precancer, but after my hysterectomy(Sept. 06) I found it was already cancer, but early stage.

I know you are scared. I was too, but I am now 16 mos. post op and still cancer free as of my latest CT scan. I was done having kids. I am 46 and both my kids are grown, so my doc suggested right away a hysterectomy, which now I am SO glad I had or this cancer would of continued to spread. This may or may not be the situation with you, but please see a gynecology oncologist. I didn't have access to one, but read online where it is highly recommended to see one if cancer is suspected.

    I wish you the best.

    Hugs

    Re: complex hyperplasia with atypia

    Hi Tami-

I was dx'd also with complex hyperplasia atypia last Oct and am at home right now recuperating from a hysterectomy. I'm 57 so I was fortunate in that regard that I didn't have to weigh the decision of becoming pregnant. That would make the decision so much harder. Going into the surgery I too was warned that there was a chance of concurrent cancer but fortunately for me I was cancer free. I had my OB-GYN do the surgery but another surgeon was on hand in case they did find cancer. Yes it is all pretty scary but I don't think it would hurt for you to get a second opinion. Maybe another dr would help in your decision making. I lean towards getting it out but you are only 30 so that is a much harder decision to make. Good luck to you and let us know how you do.
