Ferritin of 6 - what does this mean?

Can anyone help with this please? I find it all very confusing because my haemoglobin wasn't that low, 11.2. Any input would be much appreciated, thanks.

Trixibel--There are several ~stages~ of lowered iron stores with iron deficiency anemia being the end stage, when no iron is left. You can have a lowered ferritin and not be anemic. FLFLOWERGIRL

So what actually tells me if I am anaemic? She said I was. I wanted to ask for a copy of my lab results - wish I had now. All I know is I can hardly walk up the stairs. Pathetic. I'm only 39, I feel about 80!

At 11.2, I do believe you have just started with anemia. I think the low end cut-off for women is 11.7 or 12.0 for the hemoglobin. If that is the case, you are anemic.

Trixibel--I think that your lab numbers are a little different (not sure), in Australia. Call and request a copy if you can. When the Hgb or Hct is below the range you are considered anemic. 12 is usually the standard that we go by in the US although some of my labs are 11.5 as ChristineVA stated above. That is how your body adjusts by pulling from the ferritin stores until you become anemic. When I was around 11, I also had symptoms, your body is letting you know something is up. Keep us posted. I rang up the clinic and asked for my other results and my saturation is 8%, transferrin is 2.62 and ferrum (is that the same as iron and wbc or rbc?) was 5.1. I just don't get these numbers and what they mean. Thanks for your input guys.

Re: Ferritin of 6 - what does this mean?

Trixibel--They mean you are low in iron. The Serum Iron is the amount of iron that is in the blood stream at the time of testing. This value changes according to what you eat that day, and supplements can effect this as well. Low serum iron and low ferritin = IDA.

All of these tests help in the DX of anemia and tell about the iron. But the more accurate amount of iron stored in the body is based on the Ferritin. And the Hct and Hgb on the CBC are the values they use to DX anemia. FLFLOWERGIRL
