    Safety of DHEA supplements

I have been having what I belive is Adrenal Fatigue. I went and had the ACTH test and it was normal. I had a urin cortisol test and it was high and I also had a blood cortisol and DHEAS test and both were low.
I did a saliva test for the DHEAS and it was low and the so was the cortisol saliva test starting in the PM. I am also hypothyroid with hashimotos. I have terriable exhaustion and achyness that wont go away. My tiredness is sometimes accompined with and upper back pain and intense itching in the lung area. At first I thought it was a lung problem but doc check to see if I had fluid and there was none. Nothing I do stops my symptoms. I have been hypo and hyper and still have the exhaustion. I am on armour thyroid and have been for quite some time after switching from levothyroxine, which did nothing for me. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows the true safety of talking DHEA? I belive this will raise my DHEAS level but I dont want my testestrone or estorgen to rise. I was thinking of just taking 5 mg of pure pharmacy grade DHEA for about 9 months to see if I improve. Do you think this is risky? At this point I am willing to try anything to feel better.
    thanks

I think what I read is that you had a high urine cortisol and low DHEA-S.
You need to see a pituitary specialist and get checked for cylical Cushing's syndrome. I had many low and normal tests before I was diagnosed.

DHEA is OTC, but it will raise your estrogen and testosterone. If you need to do testing on your other hormones, which it sounds like you do, then you probably should not introduce this variable into the mix.

It took may doctors before I got diagnosed so dont't get discouraged. It took me more than 10. Try to find not a diabetes doc but a pit doc.

    thanks,
most of the test show low cortisol. Doesnt cushings cause you to have the moon face and to gain weight. I am very thin at 97 pounds and dont gain wait at all, however I have lost a few pounds for no apparent reason and I do crave salt but I try to stay away from it.

Yes, those are some of the symptoms of Cushing's. However, I have met some with Cushing's that did not gain weight. Unfortunately, it is not an easy disease to diagnose and not everyone has all the symptoms and some do not gain (wish that had been me!).
Still, I would go see a pituitary endo doctor as it is strange that you are having both high and low results and get a ACTH stimulation test.
I have had friends that *swung* from too high to too low with cortisol - when you are too low, you want salt and are very sick and too high, you have energy and feel fine.
If you do crave salt, that means your body needs it - you can get salt tablets so that you do not have to consume, say, empty carbos to get what your body is screaming for. I would encourage you to get some and take it when your body needs it so you will not get ill.

The opposite question is how safe is not having DHEA in your system? DHEA is the most abundant hormone in your body, it is known to influence immunity and it has anti cortisol properties.

Millions of people have been taking DHEA for years with virtually no reported side effects. DHEA is also a prescription medicine in Europe. Unfortunately there will be no long term safety tests because DHEA can't be patented and so its virtually worthless to the pharmacy companies.

thanks for the info. I will see if my endo will look at the pituarty thing and also work with testing me on my hormone levels because I do want to start the 5mg of DHEA.
