    Unhappy Chronic sinus problems

Never had an adequate solution in 50 yrs. When I lie down, I have a constant drip down the back of my throat. During the day, I constantly have to sniff, which drives me and all those around me crazy. My face hurts constantly, and the dripping results in bad breath. Dr. said I have a deviated septum but he doesn't think that's what's causing the sinus problem. Said there's nothing I can do. No sprays, pills, etc. have ever helped.

What sprays, pills, etc. have you taken (or are you taking) to try to treat it?

I have used virtually every RX spray, etc. that has been available over the past 10-12 yrs.

    Re: Chronic sinus problems

In general, there are 3 things you should consider. First of all, saline irrigation with a SinusRinse bottle or neti pot is one of the best (and least expensive) treatments for chronic sinusitis.

Beyond that, the two most likely culprits behind chronic sinusitis are allergies and acid reflux (particularly LPR). It's fairly easy to get tested for allergies, but reflux can be a bit trickier as there's no easy test for reflux (but chronic post-nasal drip andbad breath are both common symptoms of LPR).

It may be with seeing a Gastroenterogist to get checked for reflux.

Thanks for your response (KC is my home). I've used the saline solution at least 2-3 times---did not help. I've been tested for acid reflux by a gastroenterogist cause I had colitis---don't have it. My doctor has also suggested an allergy and granted, I have not had allergy test yet. I guess that's the only rock I haven't looked under.

Pardon my incredulity but you have PND and sinus pressure and you've tried all these things but no allergy testing? What are you afraid of? Seems to me that would have been the first course of action - at least it is with ENTs, etc here in Alabama. Have you tried any antihistamines - zyrtec, claritin, allegra, etc?

As far as antihistamines, I've tried all of those and then some. And I'm not afraid of allergy tests; but my own doctor suggested allergies (as did my ENT doctor) only because nothing else they tried provided an answer. And they're expensive. But I haven't ruled it out.

    Re: Chronic sinus problems

I'm writing for my husband, he has had chronic sinus problems since he was in his teens. He has had several different diagnosis from several doctors and non of them have bothered to help. Here are his symptoms:
    severe sinus congestion
    sever dizziness
    hearing loss
popping and ringing in his ears

The dizziness is getting worse. When it occures he can't get up without feeling like he's going to faint.

Recently we had to take him to the emergency room and the dr there told him his sinus where so bad that this was causing his hearing loss and dizziness, but when we took him to a family dr., he rebuked the findings and sent him to a Ear/Throat specialist who then immediatly wanted to do a hearing test even though he had the xray from the ER showing his sinus where completely blocked. My husband has been suffering for 30 years and insist that they put tubes in his ears and help clear up his sinus. But they won't listen to him. They want to give him hearing ads. Its all about the $$$$

What can we do to get the medical field to listen to their patients and stop acting like we are stupid.

    Dragonfire25-

It sounds like you've had a bad experience, but it's not "all about the money" - the cost of hearing aids is nothing compared to what it costs to treat chronic sinusitis (which can involve expensive surgery, endoscopic exams, and ongoing care).

Second, an x-ray from the ER is not a very helpful diagnostic tool (unless by x-ray you actually mean a full sinus CT scan), and really wouldn't show sinus blockage very clearly.

You don't mention whether the ENT you visited performed an endoscopic exam, but I'm assuming he didn't based on your description.

Regardless of what has happened so far, your husband needs to see an ENT who specializes in chronic sinusitis (not all ENTs have the training and experience to treat chronic sinus disease), and needs an endoscopic exam so the doc can see if there are any blockages in his sinuses.

There are some excellent ENTs in Texas who specialize in treating sinus disease. In particular, Dr. Martin Citardi (University of Texas at Houston Medical School) and Dr. Pete Batra (Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas).

If those are too far to travel, let me know where you live and I'll try to find someone near the area where you live.
