how bad is my tmj and should i be worried

I was diagnosed with tmj after many visits to different doctors due to ear pain and irritation I finally went to the ear specialist and he looked in my ear found nothing and diagnosed it to tmj cause it was my jaw making my ear itch and irritate and now it is obvious that it has been my jaw cause my right side of my jaw hurts sometimes. Now I can still open my mouth wide but I hear cracking noises. I can eat food fine it doesn't really hurt when I eat and sometimes the pain goes away but most of the time it feels like there is something stuffed in my ear and it feels like something pokes it and also it sometimes feels itchy. I'm wearing a splint right now made by my orthodontist after they took x rays and molds of my teeth but I'm worried this might get worst in time and also disfigure my face. The best way I can describe the pain is like imagine your jaw is connected by a bunch of screws and one of those screws on my right side is loose and out of place.

Also I think I got TMJ when I was weightlifting one day I tried to lift this weight I foolishly increased and tried to force myself to lift it and I ended up pulling something in my neck it hurt but I could handle it. Then I later developed TMJ symptoms but I'm not really sure it was that incident but it is the only thing I remember happening just before all this TMJ stuff began that was about 3 months ago and now I'm using a splint made by my orthodontist.

A lot of times tmj symptoms are caused by muscles. I would always recommend getting checked out by the doctor and dentist first, as you've done. Then, if you can afford to pay for it out of pocket, try to find someone who does intraoral tmj massage. The cracking sounds can be made by the lateral pterygoid muscle. The ear symptoms can come from the medial pterygoid muscle. They need to be massaged from the inside. The practitioner wears surgical type gloves while they do this. I suffered for two years before finding certified neuromuscular therapy. I had to drive an hour and pay a lot of money but after three visits my symptoms are about 90% better. And what a relief it was to find out that the symptoms were just muscles, and not something bad wrong with the joint or the ear.

I too would suggest you see a dr - like a neurologist or cervical chiro and have your c-spine (neck) checked - there are many cervical disorders (like a bulging or displaced cervical disc) that produce symptoms akin to tmj and since the neck and jaw share the same muscles its possible your issue is really stemming from the incident with the weights.

I'm pretty sure it was that incident gosh I'm so ****** I had to try to force it I found exactly where the pain is right in front of my right ear and I massaged it and it feels swollen and I look in the mirror and it looks like the right side of my face got bigger so im guessing my jaw went out of place towards the side. I think I just made it worst when I was massaging it and pushing it all over the place.

Re: how bad is my tmj and should i be worried

I was massaging the front part of my right ear and also below and behind my right ear where the pain was and i started pushing the general area towards the other side it felt really numb and while i was pushing and rubbing the front part of the ear i heard a few pops and i kept doing this cause repeatedly to make the popping noise and it popped for a few times and now i can't get it to pop i'm not sure if i fixed or made things worse but right now there is no pain. Well actually I never really had any pain more like an annoyance cause my right ear always felt numb, plugged, and poked.
