Low Ferritin and Normal Iron- Hair

My Ferritin tested low (17) but Iron levels are normal (>100). I've lost about 50% of my hair over the last year. Can low Ferritin cause hair loss even though the IRON levels are NORMAL?

Have you had your thyroid tested? I always know when my thyroid meds need adjusting when my hair starts falling out..

Oh yes. It happened to me. I had a ferritin of 30 with a normal serum iron. Major hair loss and extreme fatigue. A research dermatologist told me that the rock bottom ferritin level for a woman is 70; anything lower will produce symptoms. She said the current lab reference values need to be updated.

Did your hair grow back, and if so, how long did it take to see regrowth and at what Ferritin level?

It took about six months before my hairdresser could see progress. Such a long wait! At recheck my ferritin was 201. That was three months after starting supplements & eating red meat again.

    My very best to you.

Hi, was it 6 mths to see rerowth from the time your ferritin levels returned to normal? Also, how long did it take from the time your hair fell out to find out it was the Ferritin?

Yes, it was about six months to see regrowth in my situation; yours may be different I don't know. Hair grows in phases and I just had to be patient. I was so relieved to find the cause I didn't mind waiting at that point.

It took a long time to find out it was the ferritin; probably a year or more. My gyne thought it was my low fat diet, my GP said it can't be iron because serum was normal. If I had seen a dermatologist first it probably would have been caught sooner but seriously, wouldn't this be easy enough for a GP to rule out? Don't get me started. So much time wasted and hair lost because of ignorance. Not to mention the horrible fatigue which nearly immobilized me.

What dosage of iron did you take, and did you take any multivitamins?

Thanks for your responses, this is really helpful.

Wow, you've really got me digging into the ol' archives here. As I recall, the iron dose was 125 mg twice a day initially, but I could be mistaken. The specific supplement name was Trinsicon (conison), a prescription Rx. It contains iron fumarate, much kinder to the tummy. It also contained Vit c, B12 and intrinsic factor. However, it is no longer made and I can't locate the ingredient label online anymore. Maybe you'll have better luck.

I did not take a multivitamin because for some reason they give me nausea. I wish I could.

Glad this info is helping you. I sure wish I had known about these boards when I was so ill!
