    Re: Neurontin for neuropathy symptoms

Well, I've been taking Neurontin for several months now. The groggy state wore off finally. I don't know that it helps with the burning, stinging, throbbing in my feet, but I have found recently that eating sugar seems to make it worse.

Does sugar both anyone else? Just something I have noticed with myself.

I'm still taking the neurontin, but after standing on my legs for a while, the symptoms are back.

If I just lay around all the time, I do ok. But with the weight gain from neurontin, that's not an option.

    Re: Neurontin for neuropathy symptoms

You know, that really gives me something to ponder. Here lately it seems that my appetite has increased while taking Nurontin. And that may be so because of increasing the dosage, per my doctor. But anyway, I seem to crave sugar more than normal, which wasn't that much at all. I was thinking that because of my increased dosage, that my feet are stinging and burning more, especially right after I take my meds, which sounds CRAZY, I know, but it's true. I definitely need to consult my doctor on this one, because I sure haven't read anything anywhere about this drug making the pain worse!

Thanks for the alert on the sugar issue! Oh, and if anyone has heard of Nurontin having an adverse effect, please let us know.

    Take care, all!

    Re: Neurontin for neuropathy symptoms

I had only trouble on Neurotin and Lyrica. It definitely made all of my neuropathy symptoms worse. My whole body would burn after I took any on these meds. I know I had a cardiologist tell me that he has never heard of anyone getting relief from these drugs for neuropathy. Some people will get temporary relief and then have to keep raising there dosages until they are at a dose that makes them a zombie and have to come off of them. I had a pain management specialist tell me that alot of people get the opposite effect from these drugs and make there pain worse. I wish I had been told that before I tried them as my pain is 10 times worse than before I had tried any of these meds.

Hello, it's been a while since I've checked in. Still taking neurontin for the neuropathy symptoms. How much is too much?

Other than lyrica, what other meds may help?

Today is day 7 of no sugar. Thought I would try going without to see how much this helps.

    Re: Neurontin for neuropathy symptoms

I was on 1800 mgs, I think, but I know that you can go much higher than that. I'm on Lyrica now, which I like better. When I get up to three a day, I hope it'll help more. I'm like you, though, for some reason, sometimes, I think I'm burning more right after I take it. I don't understand that, and it bugs me really bad.

I'm beginning a new trial of supplements, the B vits, etc., so I hope I see an inprovement. I was on the WSN Nerve Support Formula, but it's too expensie for my pocketbook right now; I'm getting more for my money in the long run buying what I need locally.

As far as other meds, I also take Tramadol for breakthrough pain, and it helps. It's pretty inexpensive too, and that always helps.

Let us know how you feel without the sugar. I hope it helps the pain, but you'll be in better health overall without it, or as much of it.

jwood, I think you can go up to 3200 on the Neurontin;under a doctor's care of course. Other meds for neuropathy are Topamax, Cymbalta, or a combination of Cymbalta and a low dose of Neurontin. I can't think of anything else except Lyrica. You'd think there would be more than a handful of meds for a condition that so many people have, wouldn't you??....janiee

    Re: Neurontin for neuropathy symptoms

After reading everyone’s posts here, I truly wish you all the best. I felt the exact same symptoms and with my neurologist having me try different medications that would help the pain, but not cause the side effects of nausea, depression, acid reflux or feeling light headed.

I kept notes of my daily activities, day-to-day symptoms for about 4 months. It got to the point that the cost of the medications, every month was depressing enough. I decided to (at least) try and take multi-B vitamins, and folic acids at night and during the day take Tylenol arthritis. I again kept a daily journal and after several months, my symptoms were almost the same as they were on the different medications I was on.

It’s been six months now and although I deal with the effects of neuropathy every day, I’m at least not carrying the extra weight of the cost of the medication and even more importantly, no side effects. I have my daily physical therapy routines, and I walk as much as possible. I strong vibrator on my legs at night really help.

Wishing everyone the best with their health………….

    Janiee,
I am currently taking 1200 mg daily of neurontin. I think I could use more, but so far, have chosen to stay at this level. My boss started having problems with his hands and feet, started on neurontin 300 mg daily. He said that it was great for about 3 or 4 weeks but had to increase to two daily 600 mg total.

Thanks or the ideas of other types of meds for this issue.

    Re: Neurontin for neuropathy symptoms

IslandJohnny, you mentioned taking folic acid, so I thought I'd mention to you and others that I've begun taking Alpha Lipoic Acid, along with B1 just a few days ago. I'm holding off on the B12 until I go to my doctor in March and get some blood work done to see if I'm B12 deficient. But I swear - and I'm not crazy - that my feet already feel better. They're not burning half as bad as they normally do. Am I just having a few good days? I don't know... maybe. I will take good notes and check back in after a week or so, if not before, and let everyone know if I still feel the improvement. I read up on everything and have been asking a lot of questions, so maybe there's some truth to it.

As far as a massager for legs, I went to Wal-Mart and bought one, but I'll have to take it back. Two reasons: One, the thing is like lifting 5 lbs, way to heavy for me to hold and try to massage myself; two, I wasn't real comfortable with the way it made my legs and feet feel afterwards. I was probably just scared. But I tried. Maybe one that's not so big, bulky, and heavy!

Hope everyone has a better day tomorrow than today!

    Re: Neurontin for neuropathy symptoms

I stopped taking neurontin. My feet and lower legs were swollen, a condition I believe
was caused or at least seriously aggravated by the neurontin. I had been taking it for
a month and experienced no real relief from pain and other symptoms. I also tried Lyrica for a short time, but it did not help me.

    Re: Neurontin for neuropathy symptoms

I was on neurontin for my legs which would keep me up at night with cramping. I didnt like the drunk feeling and other side effects, I found out a major side effect that neurontin is known for and the docs do not tell you about is weight gain, apparently this is a very common side effect, I gained atleast 15 lbs. while on it in a short time. I took the neurontin at night, but woke feeling drunk every morning, and I could not function well for atleast 2 hours after I woke up. When I had to take it during the day a couple of times because I was in such pain, it knocked me out cold, so I quit taking it. It worked well for the pain, but I guess any med would when it put me in a coma lol. I do know many patients do well on it though, because it does work for pain where other meds do not.

    Re: Neurontin for neuropathy symptoms

I don't know what the deal is on the weight gain from neurontin and lyrica, but the same thing has happened to me, and I'm very frustrated over it! I saw a commercial for lyrica, which is what I'm taking now, for fybromyalga - I'm taking it for neuropathy - and they even said on TV that one of common side effects was weight gain! But no one explains why the weight gain. I'm not eating any more than I ever have before, so I don't get it. I'm thinking it slows down the metabolism or something. That's one of the main reasons I want off of these meds, is because of the side effects, and not just the weight gain. The ALA I do believe is helping along with the B1. I'm determined to stay on these supplements in hopes that I will improve. I was also advised to take three fish oil tablets daily, which I used to take one or two because they're so good for you anyway, but I added that extra one. One of the reasons I remember is for inflamation.

Kasey, have you tried Tramadol/Ultram. I take that as needed, and it does help a lot on some occasions.

    Re: Neurontin for neuropathy symptoms

Hi, I was put on neurontin and vicodin only. I quit taking the neurontin because of the side effects, but then took it a couple of times during the day when I was in alot of pain and didnt know what else to do, of course it knocked me out. I am going back to the doc to get referred to a specialist to see what can be done. I have arthritis in my facet joints, very low back, cannot be on my feet long or I get pain in my calves, then if I am up too long, I get cramping in my calves, if the weather is changing, I get cramping in them that can keep me up at night. I was told after many tests on my legs that this problem is caused by my back problem. I had a laminectomy years ago for a large herniation. It helped me with that problem, but I was told I also had stenosis, and now because of the cold weather, I seem to be having way more problems with my back and legs this winter, now I also have arthritis in the basal joint of my thumb, and neck stiffness and swelling in the back of it where I have arthritis and a bone spur. I dont know for sure what type of doc to go to. I had to apply for disability because I had to quit my job of 6 years because I tried going back after surgery and found I cannot be on my feet long without symptoms. This was years ago, and I have seen one doc for my neck, one for my back, one for my thumb, lol, and would like to see one rather than many. Do you know if I should see a neuro, ortho, or arthritis doc? Thanks

    Re: Neurontin for neuropathy symptoms

My name is Terrie. I also have neuropathy. I take neurontin. I have been on this med for about 1 year. Befor this I took lyrica. I take anywhere from 300mg to 900 mg. depending on how bad my legs hurt. I found that it is best to work up to the amount prescribed. For the first week or so about 30 minutes after taking it I would get some major head rushes and I was really tired. That head thing does not happen now. I still have alot of fatigue. It could be the meds or the Lupus or both. My biggest issue with it is the weight gain. I gained about 30 pounds and no matter what I try I just can't seem to lose it. Super frustrating! However it is very effective at controling my nerve pain.
    Peace, Terrie
