Tingling & Pain in legs and Pain in butt help!

    Hi,

I have had back issues for quite a while. I am 38 YO Female . In 1996 I broke my sacrum in a car accident. It was a fracture down the middle. Doc just told me not much we can do. I had crutches for a bit. It healed in a few months. Every since them I had had pain in that area and butt. It sort of feels like a deep bruise and sore to touch. I developed lipomas shortly after on both sides of lower back. At least that what GP told me she thinks they are.

Over the years I would periodically get pain in my legs and a a few times they would feel weak like they could give out. I started having feet and leg tingling 2 yrs ago. I sometimes get fasculations in my legs as well. The tingling will start up and last for a few months. It would vary in intensity and would do it for 30 min stop then do it again later in the day. No rhyme or reason. Then it would disappear for a few months . I had an episode of severe burning in my upper thighs early this year and it lasted about 1 week. I thought shingles and went to urgent care but not shingles and he said sciatica is usually on one side so doc had no clue. SO I have no idea what that was.

Now the tingling has started again but worse than the other times. I decided well I need to get this figured out and booked an appt with back specialist at the neurolgy clinic. He is doing MRI and EMG for my legs in a few weeks.

I had an MRI a few years ago when I lived in another state and that PA said I have a slight bulging disc at L4 and L5 and nothing really to do except physical therapy which really did not do anything. He said it really did not look bad and everyone has this.

Today I had my husband massage my left hip & butt area for like an hour . It hurts but feels good when massaged. Hard to explain. Its like it takes the pressure feeling off when its massaged. About 1 hour after he finished I got up and noticed my butt is now burning very bad on that side . The pain is just like it was when I had it on the tops of my thighs this year. Its right under the buttock going around my leg to my groin. It feels pretty miserable. I cannot sit without pain . I try to put all my pressure on the other side.

What in the world could this be. I know you are not doctors but figured this has happened to some of you here.

I am thinking sciatica or something wrong with the disc or MS etc? Just scared.

Hi sunset. The first thing that comes to mind is sciatica but there could be a myriad of other things. Not a lot of help, huh? I think you did good by booking an appt for an MRI and EMG as this should help find out if there is some nerve compression. I had thigh pain as you describe a few years ago and it was caused by foraminal stenosis (nerve root being pinched). In my case, surgery was needed as the pain was constant and growing in intensity. As it was, I put it off longer than I should have and now have permanent damage.

I hope you will stay in touch and let us know the results of your tests and what recommendations you get for treatment. Good luck to you.

    Carol

Tingling and shooting pain point to nerve problems, ie a herniated disc somewhere in your spine. You should go see a neurologist and get an MRI. I am recovering from spinal surgery now and those issues usually don't resolve themselves. I am learning that the hard way. Keep us posted.

I called the nurse this morning and she told me to come in. The back dr. who ordered the MRI and who is doing the emg is a Dr of Osteopathic Medicine.
The website says He is an expert in the evaluation and treatment of acute and chronic spine disease, and he stresses the avoidance of spine surgery where ever possible in his treatment recommendations. Am I even seeing the right kind of drs?

He did another physical exam today checking reflexes and asking me to bend down push his hands back etc. I told him where on the lower back it hurt and where the burning was. He said he is not sure what it is. I asked if sciatica he said no. He said my exam does not match a sciatica problem based on where my pain is. He said peripheral neuropathy can come from 1000s of things. Said sometimes we can figure it out sometimes not. Told me lets see what MRI says. I am having that tomorrow. Then the leg test the 2nd of sept . He said if he does not see anything then it will be up to the regular neurologist to figure it out. I see the neurologist in his building on the 2nd after the leg test.

He did give me gabapentin to take. How does this make you feel?

Are you seeing a neuro? The burning in the thigh and tingling could be signs of MS. I would ask about it.

sunsetbeach, I wouldn't go worrying now about the remote possibility of having MS. Try to take one appt. at a time, one test at a time, and one day at a time. Hopefully by the time they take the EEG (nerve cond. test), or shortly after, they will have diagnosed your problem. It could even be your SI joint. Although, I am not so sure of that either. You might want to do a search on that. You seem to have more pain while sitting. With the SI joint, pain is usually worse when getting up from a lying down or sitting position. I have a feeling the problem is near your sacrum though. Just a guess. Remember, one day at a time ~janiee

Re: Tingling & Pain in legs and Pain in butt help!

I like D.O. physicians, my prior PCP was a D.O. (in reality no difference in education between MD and DO and they both have to meet the same standards). DO do some more hands on medicine in many cases and there are always cases where spine surgery should be avoided. But if an MRI and examination show a definitive problem that isn't going away then it's time to see if there are other treatment options.

Sometimes a complex spine problem can be beyond the scope of any non-spine doctor. Perhaps a consultation with an Orthopedic Spine Surgeon and/or Neurosurgeon will provide you more treatment options. OSS and NS don't only do surgery - there are a myriad of treatment options. If the pain in constant you may also want to see a Pain Management physician once you've seen an OSS or NS to pinpoint exactly what is going on.

I have tingling and burning in my upper thigh, my nerve specialist said it was Meralgia Paresthetica and also put me on gabapentin - so far it has caused blurry vision, can cause dizziness but hasn't with me but you gradually increase the dosage weekly (at least that's what I'm doing). The blurry vision is the downfall because it makes it hard to read anything. On the good side it has helped with the pain, I no longer have it. Most doctors will tell you it eventually goes away. I have had it going on four months now. It started with hip pain which after an MRI were tears in my spine. Good luck! If you find anything to rid yourself of it, let ME know! I had an active life before this.

My orthopedic surgeon referred me to the nerve specialist.

Re: Tingling & Pain in legs and Pain in butt help!

I would advise you to see a spine specialist. Most doctors are not prepared to treat the back in full and though surgery should be a last resort, you should have someone who can best evaluate your MRI and other test results.

No one can do that quite like an Orthopedic Spine Specialist or a Neurosurgeon. It doesn't mean you need surgery, only that you are seeing someone who is best trained in spotting problems and knows best how to treat the problems. You may have to see several doctors before you find one who you are comfortable with and who listens to you. Any diagnosis should be followed up by a second opinion.

    Wishing the best for you.....

    Carol

I agree with Maltluvr. I have some thigh pain that was deemed partially, at least, due to my back problems.
