9 weeks post discectomy - lump on incision

I dont get to see my surgeon til next week so thought I'd ask here!

Everythings going well, I'm about 90% back to normal and going back to work today!! However I do still have a bit of backpain (that I never had before) and i've noticed I've got a hard lump at the top of my incision. It feels like half an egg under my skin. It doesn't particularly hurt but I can feel it and it's freaking me out!

Just trying to find out if anyone else has had this and if it's anything to worry about?

It may be scar tissue. But, it never hurts to ring the doc...post-surgical patients are expected to have questions and it is fine to call and ask. You can also ask if the pain is within the expected recovery process or a concern. Most docs have very good LPNs or other recovery nurses skilled in these questions

It could also be a post-opt hematoma, which will usually get absorbed by the body as the weeks go by. But I would call the surgeon's office and ask.

Thanks very much for the prompt replies!

I cannot get hold of the surgeon for love nor money so phoned the sister on the orthapedics ward where I was operated on and to my surprise rather than telling me to wait til Wednesday to see the surgeon I've got to go up today and be there by 12 so they can check it out.

So will report back! Fingers crossed its nothing to worry about.

Went to hospital and good news - surgeon thinks its entirely normal swelling as the layers they cut through are slowly knitting back together, he thinks its nothing to worry about and they'll review at my official appointment next week. Phew! Thanks for helping x

Glad you got reassurance. Def think it is better to ask and be sure...and reduce the recovery stress too.

Re: 9 weeks post discectomy - lump on incision

Had the same issue after my L5-S1 microdiscectomy in '08. It was just fluid buildup between the skin and muscle as a result of the incision. They used a syringe to remove the fluid and all was well.
