I don't understand how you can have a retrograde flow of gastric acid all the way up to your sinuses to cause post nasal drop and not experience heartburn.

How can it reach the sinuses without it being felt in the esophagus?

The esophagus has some natural defenses against stomach acid. It's tougher, although less tough than the actual stomach. The throat and sinuses have no such defenses.

    I second Jane.

Although I had extremely severe LPR, I always attributed my sinus problems and PND solely to allergies. After I had reflux surgery, I went from having almost constant sinus problems to having less than one sinus infection per year. That convinced me that I was experiencing a side effect of acid reflux as it pertains to my sinuses. In my case, although probes confirmed the acid hitting my throat I never had any issues with heartburn.

It's also my understanding that in order for refluxed acid to cause heartburn, it has to stay in the esophagus long enough to cause irritation. Also, the esophagus isn't as sensitive to irritation as the throat is. Therefore, if the acid passes quickly through the esophagus but pools in the throat, heartburn symptoms will not occur but LPR symptoms will.

    Ovechkin,

Exactly what I thought, and it was a great relief to see the Vaizi (sp.) study that suggested that ppis treated LPR as well as sugar pills, if I remember the details.

However, there are people who have benefited from surgery and ppis on these boards, and people who say the ppis actually help...

I think maybe there are a number of conditions that produce the same throat symptoms (which is a fact).

Still I can't accept that LPR without heartburn is even possible, and if I ever allowed myself to believe that, I am worried that my next step would be to join a cult.

As far as I know, the whole acid reflux as the cause of globus/throat clearing can all be traced to Jamie Koufman in the early 1980s. Other doctors got on board, others have never heard of it to this day, and others don't even believe it. This is what I found, in my reading, but it's just my opinion. In either case, it looked to me that around 2010, a lot of doctors started talking about "the diffiiculty of making an LPR diagnosis" which means (to me) that doctors studying the disease don't even know for sure that it exists.

But anyway, Jamie Koufman has a great LPR cookbook! Maybe that cookbook will save the day. Or buy her LPR pillow! And peptigon! All great products. I think they should start selling LPR curing chia pets next, or LPR zinc bracelets. People with bad LPR symptoms would sell their left....hand....... to stop it. I know that first hand. A great market to sell snake oil to.

I agree that there are a number of conditions which can produce the throat symptoms. When seeking solutions for treatment or prevention of symptoms all avenues should be persued.

From my personal experiences, internet research and discussions with many specialists, I respectfully disagree that LPR isn't possible. I have had multiple Barium swallows and upper pH tests that actually confirmed that I had severe acid coming up past my UES. To me, these results, along with ruling out of many other conditions, are a confirmation that the acid is linked directly to my throat issues. When I finally got my acid reflux under control, my sinus and throat issues were under control as well.

I think when people have problems all avenues should be persued, be they medicinal, lifestyle changes or other homeopathic approaches. I think it is appropriate to share our experiences and what we have learned to help others on this board seek out answers for their issues and make informed decisions, but I think it is irresponsible for people to disregard avenues of treatment that may be very appropriate in their situations based upon the opinion of one person. I hope everyone who reads this keeps that in mind.
