    Adderall Alternatives

    Hi all,

First post here. I have been a lifelong ADHD'er, and was given Ritalin at age 6. I currently am prescribed Adderall 30 mg, but the shortage of the familiar orange tablets were unavailable, "on backorder". I went to Walgreens and got my prescription filled with pink tablets, which were terrible, they were just useless.

After so much time using these powerful meds, I have been trying to find a alternative. I am getting older and worry about the effect the powerful stimulants have on my heart and body. Adderall also makes me feel like my body is getting "worn out", I have to take breaks from it as it feels like I am abusing my brain and body.

I have tried synapto but that didn't do anything or me. I wonder what others have tried that is a more natural product that works for them?

Amphetamines promote the release and block the reuptake of Dopamine in the CNS. It's very difficult to replicate this effect with 'natural' supplements.

You can try supplementing L-Tyrosine, as shortage of L-Tyrosine can lead to a shortage of both Dopamine and Norepinephrine (L-Tyrosine is a precursor of Dopamine which is a precursor of Norepinephrine). That said, because there are several enzymes involved in the process that play the role of limiting the supply of these neurotransmitters, supplementation of L-Tyrosine will only result in more Dopamine if you are in short supply to begin with.

Others have reported that supplementation with Fish Oil or other animal-based omega-3 analogues lead to positive effects. Apart from that, 'clean living' is extremely important in management of ADHD - ensure that your diet is healthy and short on synthetic chemicals or excess sugar, make sure you get plenty of sleep (7-8 hours per night), and try to get regular daily exercise.

    Best of luck.

    Re: Adderall Alternatives

As a mom of two ADD boys, I feel for you. If you are going to take Rx meds, research the additives. My oldest son is very sensitive to those so he has to always know what's in his pills. The other son uses high doses of vitamin B's, omega 3, vitamin D, and curcumin, no Rx (he gets too many stomach problems with them). Both watch their diets, the oldest,an adult, is careful about his alcohol intake with his meds. Good luck.
