Anxiety and high blood pressure? Is it real or not? In desperate need of help

So I am currently taking a low dose of Hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg for my high blood pressure. I am 23 years old and just feel way too young to be dealing with this.

So anyway I originally was taking almost 40 mg of lisinopril as well as the diuretic, but my doctor began to notice that in her office my bp of "160/70" just didn't make much sense. We found that at home most of the time my blood pressure is in the 125-140 systolic range, so medication was lowered.

But now I am worried that I am not treating my blood pressure properly. I suffer from severe anxiety/panic disorder although could it have caused the high blood pressure?

    1. I have serious health anxiety about dying of a stroke or heart attack because sometimes my pressure is high even at home "155/80" but then if I wait a few minutes and take it again it usually falls back down to 130/70 and if I exercise it will fall into 120's. Do you think I might die in the next few years?

    2. I obsess about my blood pressure every day, before my anxiety was centered around cancers, social situations but now I am entirely focused on my heart and worried about heart problems. I got 2 echocardiograms and 2 ekgs and both were normal, but now I am thinking maybe I need to get more tests?

    3. Does anyone else have anxiety/high blood pressure? And can anxiety cause it? Also do occasional high readings mean I have true hypertensioN?

    Thank you

Re: Anxiety and high blood pressure? Is it real or not? In desperate need of help

Being anxious can definitely cause higher blood pressure. By higher I mean 140-160, which is high, but not life threatening. I know of people, who would get 180-200 and that is much higher if you ask me. Those however did not have anxiety, but some other condition I am not familiar with. Occasional high blood pressure is not extraordinarry.

I too worry very much occasionally about my health. This can cause high blood pressure and even rapid heart rate. So most of the time during the day my heart rate is about 90 beats per minute. When I am relaxed in the night and know that I can have a good sleep it goes down to 60. My blood pressure during the day is around 130/80 and when I am relaxed it goes down to 120/70. When I am really anxious it was higher though, maybe 145/95.

Yesterday I had something that I call an almost panic attack. I was sweating, had a strange feeling in my chest and felt light headed and difficulty breathing. I sat it through, which was pretty uncomfortable. It occured when I was driving to my karate training. I kept telling myself that if I had a serious health issue the doctors would have found it by know, since I have been to a lot of them and I was feeling alright when I took a higher dose of Paxel, so it must be anxiety. I managed to cope with it and get my exercise done, which proved to me that I was right. Had it been my heart I would have felt worse and probably couldn't have exercised. But even then it would not for sure have to be my heart, but anxiety taking over. I am glad that I had won.

I did not used to have high blood pressure. In fact it used to be rather low when I was younger (before having anxiety) 110/70. Nowadays I deal with anxiety and it is higher and I am pretty sure that it is caused by the anxiety. Sometimes I tend to think that it is the other way around, but I do notice that I am listening inside my body all the time and worry too much and think negative thoughts often and that I attribute to anxiety itself.

I too suffer from anxiety/depression. I have a syndrome called POTS. It is tachycardia and high blood pressure. It is hard to control. When it acts up my heart begins to race and I can feel my blood pressure rising, this in turn causes my anxiety to start ending in a full blown panic attack. I usually just sit in my recliner everyday and do nothing. I just had my antidepressant switched to Viibryd about 6 weeks ago. I take Xanax once or twice aday to take the edge off. I struggle everyday.

That is about the worst thing you can do, since it leaves you alone with your thoughts and no distraction from what you are feeling.

I agree with you. I was was admitted for suicidal thoughts the end of Jan. 2012. I can no longer work, exercise or have a quality of life for the past two years. My "friends" no longer call me or text me because of being so sick all the time. Life is hard.

Keep in mind that by trying to avoid every negative thing that might happen to you you inevitably also avoid the good things that might happen.

Re: Anxiety and high blood pressure? Is it real or not? In desperate need of help

I know how you feel.... I never used to have high blood pressure but ever sense receiving a high reading at a Doctors visit 150/78 I have developed some sort of anxiety over my blood pressure, now when ever I take it I get anxious....therefore always getting a high reading, which in turn makes me more anxious, a vicious cycle! I do have general anxiety which had gotten worse post partum and I also harbor a fear of some heart defect... I have suffered from tachycardia and palpitations for years now, and lately any twinge or pain in my left arm.. sudden hot flash which leads to sweating, shortness of breath I panic and think HEART ATTACK! no way to live.... the mind can be a powerful and unrelenting force. I have dealt with constant lightheaded sensations for years now as well..when will it end, no idea.... but i find comfort in forums, knowing there are others out there with fear and anxiety.

Re: Anxiety and high blood pressure? Is it real or not? In desperate need of help

Well, I'll tell ya, I have anxiety and it can cause high blood pressure but mine is actually low despite it. There are several factors to consider.

Are you overweight? Are you low on Potassium? Those will both raise it. Does it run in your family? It can just be hereditary.

Blood pressure is one of those things that is easy to treat and if it's treated you won't have heart disease from it. People live long happy lives with treated high blood pressure.

Exercise, eat right, do something that distracts you from worrying. High blood pressure isn't heart disease. Don't check your blood pressure hourly or even daily. Just once a week if you have to.

Sometimes setting a routine of good habits will lower ones blood pressure naturally. Instead of worrying be pro active.

My husbands sister has had high blood pressure since an early age as well, she wasn't overweight but she went vegetarian and exercised and was able to ditch her meds that way.

Your anxiety over it is separate. Blood pressure meds will fix your real problem. Anxiety will only create other problems that aren't real. Like heart disease. Stop concentrating on yourself and concentrate on something else. Get a hobby or watch a funny show. Anything to distract your mind and get it off yourself.
