    Ferritin 21-thinning hair - struggling

Hi. I am in this spiral of hair loss that is truly ruining my life. I have extreme anxiety and depression that I'm trying to deal with on top of looking like I'm balding. I finally got a bunch of bloodwork done assuming it was thyroid or hormones. My periods are heavy for a day or two then light for 5 more days. and i am pretty Regular, 28-30 days. But the hair loss just seemed to fit with hormones bein out of balance. Turns out everything is normal and within normal ranges with the exception of my ferritin (thanks to my dermatologist for ordering that additional test). Its a 21. I have been taking iron for 3 weeks now and don't notice any change in my energy or anxiety and of course nothing with my hair which I know will take a while.
I guess I just need some encouragement. I find it hard to believe that my hair loss and anxiety could all be related to my iron levels, but bloodwork showed nothing else.
The anxiety has put me into medical diagnosis hell trying to find what's causing the hair loss and fatigue. I have had a full mild pain in my lower left abdomen for 4 months now and went through CT scan and colonoscopy all finding nothing. I should be relieved, but then my scalp starts showing through my thin hair and it just gets me all worked up again.
I'm not shedding on my pillows or anything, its heaviest when I shower, losing close to 30 hairs during that time. Looking in the mirror at a 34 yr old with thinning hair is awful.
Tell me I'm not alone and that the iron will truly help!
Also- how much should I be taking. The dr just said to take a supplement, but wondering if i should be taking more than one a day. How do you all take your supplements? Timing it with food is so hard!!!

A ferritin level of 21 is not terribly low, and seems unlikely to be causing hair loss. I see you're a mom, how old is your youngest? The reason I ask is bc I'm on my 5th pregnancy, and with all of them I had significant hair loss afterwards. It lasted approx a year, and it was so severe that I wore wigs.

Have you seen a dermatologist? There are so many things that can cause hairloss. I've been severely anemic for almost 3 years, but that has never caused hair loss for me. Good luck. Try not to worry so much. And it will take months for your ferritin to increase when taking supplements. Hang in there.

My son is almost 15 months old. I did see a dermatologist and she said with all the bloodwork that we have run, the ferritin is the only thing indicative of a cause for hair loss despite possibly stress and/ or poor nutrition. She said that anything below a 40 could cause hair loss and anything below 70 will keep hair from regrowing after it is shed.
It makes sense, I just am struggling with the loss of hair right now and don't know what else to look at to help it return. I am looking into hair pieces because I hate been so self-concious about it!

Thanks for your input! I appreciate any and all experiences with this low iron. I am wanting to feel good again both inside and out!

Hi... I had a ferritin level of 5 and loss of hair has been one of my symptoms. I had a full head of naturally curly long hair and I have lost about half of it in the last year. Anemia can definitely be the cause.

As far as supplements I was recommended Ferrochel or Ferrofood. Just keep in mind That oral iron is very hard on the stomach. Start out slow, then increase as you are able. I was on it for 9 months, but my levels only increased temporarily - so for some reason I am unable to hold or absorb iron in my body. I am sitting her in the infusion center having my third IV iron infusion as I type this. I am on Venofer and it has done a world of good for me! I feel like I have my life back.

I learned quickly that you need to advocate for yourself. If you are not experiencing relief keep talking to the doctor and asking for other options.

    Good luck!
