Do you have to get a specific blood test to see if you have cancer?

Or does it show up on every blood test? For instance, if I was in the ER and had my thyroid tested, would they notice if something is abnormal that could be related to cancer?

Sorry if this is a stupid question.

No, cancer per se doens't show up like that. A problem with your white cell count may show up and that would be a trigger for further testing. But no, nothing in a CBC will say "cancer somewhere" but some things may indicate an issue that needs to be investigated.

You can have an abnormal thyroid test without having cancer. Some people have sluggish thyroids (called hypOthyrodism), others have overactive thyroids (called hypERthyroidism). That is usually what's being tested for when you have thyroid tests, and your doctor would probably notify you if something was out of whack.

On the other hand, I've had tests get lost in the past, so if I don't hear from my doctor's office within a week to ten days after I have tests, I call, just to make sure everything's normal and they did get the tests back.

But as far as cancer goes, Titchou's answer was spot on. Blood tests may indicate something is off kilter, but that's as far as it goes.

    Ruth
