Low Iron (5) & Low WBC

I have been sent to a Hematologist after a check up with my PCP. My White Blood Cells have come back low. They are in the process of figuring out what is going on. My first lab results from the Hematologist came back showing my WBC's are still low, my B-12 is in the low-normal range, and he has recommended me taking shots. My iron level came back at 5! That certainly explains why I am always tired and cranky. My FANA test was borderline positive and will be retested in a few months. For now he has me on B-12 supplements/shots and I have started taking Iron.

Does anyone know if Iron deficiency can cause low White Blood Cell counts??

    Thanks,

My total iron is a 16 and my ferritin is a 7,my wbc go up and down. In some cases depending on the type and cause of anemia it can drag the wbc down. My ana was negative. I would get yours tested again. Feel better

Typically iron deficiency does not cause low WBCs. But lupus can cause low WBCs, and is associated with low iron and low Vit B12. Since your ANA was borderline +, it warrants re-checking. Do you know what the titer was? It is a ratio like 1:160. I would think the B12 and iron replacement will help you feel better in interim.

Thanks for the replies. I don't know what the titer was. I go back for another appointment and testing on July 30th after I've been on the iron and b-12 for a few months.

When I got my ana the test just said negative on it.. No range. Maybe I should get myself retested.
