    Teen boy with low ferritin

My son, 13, was diagnosis 1 month ago with low ferritin. His reading was an 8. He was not anemic yet, but was very close.

The doctor did not have any concerns that there was anthing else going on because all of his other loodwork was normal, and prescribed ferrous glutonate 325 two times a day

My CONCERN is that he has been sick with several viruses and strep throat for almost a full two months. The kind of sick that wipes him out and he doesn't do anything but sleep and sit. He had about 6 days of feeling well between the illnesses...but he just seems to catch ANY little thing that is floating around.

    His symptoms:
Feeling very cold; he is almost always wrapped in blankets

    Fatigue--extreme-sleeping 12-14 hrs a night

Shortness of breath when doing anything but sitting

depression(most likely from becoming a recluse)

I guess I am trying to ask if this can be normal for his situation. As a mother, I am worried about him, although I know that replenishing iron stores is a long process.
We theorized that he depleted his iron during the winter of 2013 when he grew 7 inches.

    I just need some reassurance/guidance.

Sorry to hear about your son. All the symptoms you are describing cause me to think "anemia" or close to it. At the moment, I would make iron the priority. Once it is restored, go from there. Hopefully he will be back to normal soon. Did the doctor or pharmacist talk about the proper way to take the iron? It is absorbed best when the stomach is acidic. Taking it with vitamin C on an empty stomach helps you absorb more. Antacids and non acidic foods cause you to absorb less.

One of my friends was anemic and she started improving within a week or two of starting the iron. As I think you mentioned, it can take months to see the full effects.

Has his B12 been checked? A deficiency can cause symptoms like he is experiencing: fatigue, depression, shortness of breath as well as many others.
    Severe B12 deficiency dx Oct 24, 2014
    Caused by pernicious anemia
    B12 below 450 pg/mL should be treated
