    Question Stapedectomy

Has anyone gone through the experience of a failed stapedectomy? If so, did the surgery do more harm than good?

    Hi kascha,

I believe nobody here has had a FAILED stapedectomy resulting in any hearing loss. Two have had stapedectomies that didn't cause any improvement. (If my memory serves).

Check down the thread called STAPEDECTORMY (orgiinated by zip2play) . It's extensive and most who've had the procedure in the last year have reported results there.

CAZ has a long thread on OTOSCLEROSIS/SODIUM FLUORIDE TREATMENTS.
CORA has started a couple of polls as well.

    Hiya,

My stap last year was unsuccessful in the sense that it did not improve my hearing. Physically the new stapes was attached ok but due to the extensive 'peppering' of oto around the cochlear my hearing is no better than before the op.

I'm glad I went through with it though, otherwise I would always be wondering 'what if...?'

I'm currently undergoing 2years of sodium fluoride to see if that helps, but 8mths down the line and there have not been any improvements as yet - nor has it got much worse.

So have you been advised to have a stapedectomy then?

    Caz

I have had 3 Stapedectomies. The first one totally destroyed my inner ear. Before the surgery I had diminished hearing in my right ear..not a big deal. After the surgery i suffered from extreme vertigo and tinnitus. The secong surgery was pointless and finally for the third surgery I had the stapes removed. One doctor mentioned that I didn't have OTO after all, but was probably born without the stapes bone. I wanted to die after the first surgery. I remember waking up in recovery and I felt as if I had been on a roller coaster for 20 hours straight.

    Failed Stapedectomy

I have had a failed stapedectomy. I went from wearing an in canal hearing aid to having absolutely no hearing in my left ear. I had vertigo for six months. It now eight months since the hearing loss/surgery and am looking into a BAHA (Bone Anchored Hearing Aid). It has been quite devastating. I think my personality has changed and I have become very introverted. It has even been difficult to assert myself with my surgeon and my audiologist.
The failure rate is only 4% of all people undergoing the procedure. I am in my early forties, and if I had known what my outcome was to be I would NEVER have considered having the operation. It was expensive and I am left with nothing but what I would call a disability. My moderate hearing loss pales into insignificance compared to the inconvenience of my current lifestyle.

Sorry to hear you have had such a bad experience. The thing is, though, if you had not gone through with the surgery you would always be wondering if you had missed an opportunity to improve your hearing. I was really worried about being one of the unlucky 4% but rationalised with myself that it was a gamble I had to take. It didn't work. Luckily my hearing was no worse afterwards, but I am still glad that I went through it - otherwise I would always be thinking 'what if...'.
I guess if there is something else they can try then you should go for it. I'm not a religious person, but I do believe that everything happens for a reason - you may find that this BAHA is brilliant and may give you better hearing than the stap would have given you...there's only one way to find out.....

Good luck with it - let everyone know how you get on.
    Caz
