OK- where to start- yes you will need a prescription- insurance helps cover mine- your insurance plan may as well- if not you could consider a place like planned parenthood or something of that nature- otherwise they should run like $25- $30 per month.

I have tried a bunch of differnet versions-
I will tell you that I did not like anything that was tri phase---the difference in hormone levels every week made me very moody!

I did not like the patch- had trouble keeping it in place

I have tried Ortho cyclen- it was ok- the Ortho brand is the only one who is authorized to market their product as clears up acne (they branded it)- but in reality all pills should help control the change in hormone levels which should ultimately result in clearer skin.

I have been given generics in the past- which I did not mind, but started having break through bleeding and my gyno said he has seen that more with generics than brand names.

I am now on Yasmin- seems to be ok so far. However, my personal favorite was Nordette 28---I took it years ago and not even sure that it is still on the market- but i had no issues at all with it.

I use Alesse and have been since May.

    -hasn't caused weight gain
-HELPED with my acne. My face has improved more and more every month.
    -no difference in sex drive
    -no difference in vaginal dryness
-cramps & moodiness as part of pms about the same
-but not sure if it is available in canada or not

Yes you need a prescription to get it. The best thing you can do is go to your gyno and she/he will help you find the best one. Every woman has a slightly different experience with any of the pills.

Good luck finding the right one for you.

A lot of people on the acne board HATE Alesse. Just thought I would share that and I agree with them. It caused my acne problems a while back. It is one of the worst ones on the androgenic (acne causing) birth control pill lists. I would recommend Yasmin...greatest for the skin and can actually make you lose weight.

I've been on Tricyclen for 2 years now, and I haven't had any problems with it thus far.
I NEVER have cramps, and if I do, they're very mild.
I originally went on it to CONTROL my acne, and I can honestly say I have a face as clear as a baby's bottom now.
I don't have a diminished sex drive or vaginal dryness at all.
I'm still grouchy, but only during that time of the month.
And... I'm from Canada, so it's clear that you can get it here

Hi, personally, I think the Copper7 IUD will do all those "wont's" for you. No hormones and it's just as good or better as the pills.

I had one for 7 years and had no problems at all and I didn't have to take pills all the time.

I take Alese and the only problem is that it worsened acne. However, my skin was not bad to begin with, so with a rigid hygene regime and good make-up, I can cope with it. Alese is the only one that doesn't wack out my moods and I have had no weight gain on it... nor has my sex drive been affected.

There is no miracle pill and what one person loves, another hates. It's all about what side-effects you can and can't live with... because there's bound to be SOMETHING. And for me, I can live with the once a month out break... it sure is better than gaining weight, because at least it can be covered up.

There is no pill that's going to magically not cause all the nasty side effects you don't want. You basically have to try out a pill and find out if you like it or not. Birth control is a real hit and miss thing, some brands you hate, some you like. Yasmin is well known not to cause weight gain, but i dont know if its available in canada. Your best option is to talk to your doctor about your questions an concerns.

ive been on tricyclen for 5 months and gained 15 lbs and have virtually no sex drive now and have horrible vaginal dryness. i just wanted to say this to point out everyone reacts different! you just have to try and see! and mine is ortho-tricyclen i think its that same thing as what the other girl that had no symptoms was on(tricylcen). but i could be wrong. but no matter what good luck!! im switching off mine in two weeks, so i like reading all the advice on here about different ones!!

Re: help me choose a birth control pill please

I just had an IUD put in a month ago. There are two currently on the market..one w/hormones and one without. I got the one without. I think its great. No side effects at all and it didn't hurt when they put it in. However, you might have some mild menstral like cramping for a few hours after they put it in...other than that, piece of cake.

The pill made me ill with headaches and caused me to have morning sickness. I got up one day and started throwing up..just like if I was pregnant. Doc took me off the pill and my symptoms stopped immediately.

Anyhow, I think the IUD is great. And if you are on a tight budget, go to a Planned Parenthood if they have one where you live. There is no charge but they do appreciate a donation. Even if its just $5.00.

    happy hunting!
