Waking up Gasping For Air and Suffocating

I have has this thing come and go for decades, where I wake up suddenly breathless and cant catch my breath. Scary. Years ago it would happen every night but only when I first fell asleep. Now it seems to happen early in he morning. I have GAD and panic disorder too. I have Xanax, Klonopins etc. But I am afraid to take them because I read that Benzes can slow your breathing and worried I may make it worse. In the back of my mind Im thinking this isn't anxiety and its something serious like COPD or heart failure. Yes I also have health anxiety.

Re: Waking up Gasping For Air and Suffocating

Hon, when you know you deal with hypochondria really to make a change you must get psychological help to learn to change how you think and what you dwell on, and face those fears. Until you do that this keeps you crippled from creating happy things in your life.

I am so sorry that you suffer those emotions! But emotions come from what we dwell on and we can learn to change what we dwell on.

I am sharing from personal experience. I had a horrendously unsupported childhood and had serious losses in my life. Yet I no longer live in fear and I can have a life now. You can do thsi too. It's up to each of us to decide to change our own thoughts and patterns and there are books and professionals that can help us do it.

Love,

It's most likely something as simple as sleep apnea or asthma - both of which are pretty easily controllable. You should see a pulmonologist for a pulmonary function test.
