    Persistent headache after sinus surgery

I am 6 weeks past sinus surgery.
Had a cyst like growth removed from maxillary sinus. In addition, the maxillary sinuses were opened up to reduce further sinus infections. The growth was benign.

Since the surgery I have had a persistent headache (non-stop 6 weeks, one long headache to be clear). In CT Scans and Brain MRIs taken 4 weeks after surgery, the maxillary sinuses look fine however the etmoid sinuses show some inflammation, although nothing extreme. There is no sign of fluid leakage or damage to the skull and via scope, everything looks 'normal'.

everything looks 'normal', but I h ave a headache that never goes away. no ENT has been able to figure it out

If you see a cause and effect, in that your symptoms started after surgery, and there is no apparent explanation for it outside of the surgery, I would go with that. You probably won't get an answer from your surgeon, if it is a complication. You probably won't get an answer from another ENT because when you see a second opinion ENT, and say "I had surgery and now I have constant headaches", they will run for the hills because they are all afraid of being embroiled in litigation.

I would suggest you see a specialist in another field and try to rule things out. It may be that they will give you some insight into how sinus surgery might precipitate a headache condiiton like you describe.

I would also suggest that you do tour own research and internet search things like maxillary or meatal antrostomy and headache and read some of the otorhinolaryngology books that are online. YOu would be surprised how much information there is out there!

PS Was anything else done to you beside the maxillary antrostomies? Do you have any nasal symptoms?

Re: Persistent headache after sinus surgery

    Hi
We are experiencing something similar with my 14 year old daughter. She had sinus surgery 6 months ago to remove a tumor and woke up with a headache that will not go away. Her surgeons deny that it had to do with the surgery and they will not (or cannot) help us. They act like they have never heard of this before.

Have you found anything since your post? I wish I had an answer for you. My daughter is on 75 mg of Noratryptoline, which may have helped a little. Or maybe it was just time. I really hope you are feeling better.

Do you have any suggestions for us?

Thank you in advance for any help you can give us.

    Heather
