Congestion, headaches etc, negative test, exhaust smell

This is my first time posting here but I need some opinions. I've had sinus congestion, pressure, post nasal drip and headaches above my nose for as long as I can remember. I'm 61 now. I was tested for allergies about 10 years ago with negative results except for histamine, which is supposed to be normal. Since I was not going to make this allergy doc any money on a constant basis, he practically pushed me out of his office. Very rude.
Several years ago, I went to an ENT. Got an X-ray and my sinus passages were dark, which the ENT said is good.
So now I am at a standstill again. I have pressure in my sinuses, post nasal drip, constant headaches in my forehead above my nose, occasional lightheadedness etc. I use decongestants, allergy meds and nasal sprays. The one thing I can't comprehend is, occasionally I have the smell of exhaust in my nose. It will last for up to 2 weeks.
    Anybody have any ideas? Thx.

You might try thinking in terms of how to improve your overall health. Good health doesn't come about by putting decongestants, allergy meds and nasal sprays in your system. All of these things may be doing more harm than good.

And what about your diet? Are you eating the best possible diet that will actively promote good health? The food you eat often determines how your body functions. Are you maintaining a healthy weight, getting exercise, 8 hours of sleep, and avoiding stress?

Do you know if you have acid reflux?

I had bad allergies, PND and chronic sinus problems for years. I always attributed it to the allergies, until I had surgery for acid reflux. I went from having sinus congestion and headaches about 8 months a year for a decade to only having one 'infection' in the last 8 years. My solution: I had surgery for acid reflux. Turns out I had a ton of aerosolized acid making it up into my sinuses causing the problems. My reflux was 'silent', with no heartburn, but the testing showed how extremely severe it was. I absolutely know I had no idea how much the acid reflux was impacting the sinuses. I don't recommend surgery as a first option, but do urge you to assess your issues to see if it may be a contributing factor to your problems.

    Hi John
Thanks for your thoughts. I do what I can afford as far as eating but I love taking long walks. Middle age crept up quickly.

    Hi Mountain

I do have acid reflux but that's not the problem. I've had problems with my sinuses since I was a teenager and that was a long time ago.
On a better note, I've done some research and found that clear sinuses (like mine) have a lot of air inside. When the barometric pressure is above normal, that air expands, causing headaches. I've started a headache "diary" and will be showing that to a headache specialist in the next 6 weeks. Hopefully, I'll have some answers. Thx!

I have had some of the same issues. I would think about seeing a different allergy doctor. I had some of the same issues with a doctor that said all my symptoms were in my head because he was such a great doctor.

I got completely different results seeing another doctor. I would try to see a younger doctor who maybe finished an allergy fellowship in the last 10-12 years and is up on the newer treatments.

I also got good results with a budesonide solution added to one of those nasal rinse kits. This site won't allow you to post links, but if you google Washington University and Budesonide Rinse and sinusitis it should pull up some good studies on this.
