Sinus Infection from Hell, please help!

I'm going to go ahead and apologize for the lengthy explanation I'm about to type. If you take the time to read it, I would greatly appreciate feedback and opinions.

I have had sinus infections 2-3 times a year for the majority of the last 6-7 years or so as far back as I can remember. Each time, they have never lasted more than a week and usually have been able to be treated easily with an antibiotic. However, I have one currently, at least I think it's one, and it is not going away despite my best efforts.

I started feeling extremely congested on the 4th of July. And I mean terribly miserably congested. It ruined the day for me and I felt like my head was heavy and one complete side of my nose was entirely blocked. It was so bad, I even caved and bought some nasal spray from Walgreens... And I hate nasal spray. In any case, I proceeded to go a few weeks without treating it and just hoped it would subside. I even tried taking Cipro at home twice a day that I had from a previous infection for about a week. However, it never did.

Towards the third week of July, I decided to go to an urgent care and they prescribed my a week's worth of amoxicillin, which they said is the general first line antibiotic to treat sinus infections. I went about 7 days or so on it, taking it twice a day, and didn't feel any better. I called back and they prescribed me levaquin. The levaquin was once a day for 10 days and it didn't help either. Meanwhile, I'm still using the nasal spray because it's the only thing that seems to at least take the pain and congestion away, though only for 4-5 hours at a time.

Also, this entire time, each morning when I wake up I am completely congested. And I don't just mean stuffed up nose. I mean both nostrils are entirely blocked and it's painful to blow my nose. Not to be gross, but when I do blow my nose, it's a combination of mucus and tints of red (blood I'm guessing) that comes out. The only thing that eventually opens my nose up is using the nasal spray. After about 10 minutes of letting the nasal spray sit in my nose, I'm able to blow both sides, and be able to breathe through my nostrils again. Once again though, this only lasts for a few hours or so and then it quickly starts to clog again.

Anyways, so after the levaquin I finally decided to see my primary Doctor... Or a rim art doctor, as I don't have one. They prescribed me a z-pack and increasing dose of prednisone. The two together lasted about 5-6 days to finish off both doses. By the end of it, i still wasn't feeling any better truthfully.

However, about 3 weeks ago or so now my coworker asked if I have tried sudafed. I have tried it in the past but it never helped. He recommended I get the sudafed-D. So I went ahead and did, and by God's grace that is the only medication that truly helps. The first few weeks of taking it was amazing. As long as I stayed on it, I could mostly function fine during the day. I still get the incredibly stuffed up and painful nose in the mornings, but after the nasal spray, it goes away. And as long as I take the sudafed-D every 12 hours I'm ok for the most part. I still have to blow my nose a few times during the day and use the nasal spray a few times as well though. In any case though, I have noticed if I go a few hours longer than I'm supposed to without taking the sudafed-D I begin to get stuffed up again.

So my question is what's wrong with me and what should I do? I need to schedule an appointment with an ENT probably... I have just been trying to avoid having to spend the $50 Copay for a specialist. But apparently, this infection or whatever it is isn't going away seeing how it's been a month and a half.

    Sorry you feel so lousy.

Get yourself to a top notch allergist ASAP.

    Nothing serious, but very annoying.

It sounds like it's caused by allergies. Because of the summer heat, I think it's been a bad 8 weeks for mold and smog. The main things to try is cortisteroid spray (flonase/rhincort); antihistamine, saline nasal wash, decongestants.

Be careful with nose sprays like afrin, if that's what you tried. Work great but have to go on the 4 days and off it plan.

Bad allergies are often identical to sinus infection, except antibiotics don't work.

Plz have it checked by a specialist ASAP. not to scare you but my sister in law went thru this about 3 months ago and it got really bad and infected her eye socket. See a ear nose and throat dr. Do you have any dizziness or vision changes? Plz don't mess around with it.

I hope you are feeling better! I totally understand the sinus issue. I get sinus infections 3 or 4 times a year. I got diagnosed with one today. It feels horrific. I usually use a Z pak and it works wonders. But because I have only been using those the doctor and I agree we need to use a different one this time so I don't become resistant to it. I am on Cipro. I hope it works and that it doesn't make me too sick. I am glad you found that Sudefed works for you. I can't live without it Yes, it works wonders for opening up you sinus's. I hope that you have this one licked!
