    Ongoing Nasal Congestion

Hello everybody! Iíve been lurking in these forums for a very long time now, but this is my first post, so please bear with me. Hereís a little background info: Iím 62, short, overweight, started menopause at 51, and was diagnosed with thyroid issues at 49. I still have my thyroid and get regular bloodwork done to check my levels. The only medications I take daily are Synthroid and Estroven. I had a COVID test a few months ago (employer insisted) that was negative. I have not had the vaccine.

Iíve had some allergy issues for many years, but OTC meds will usually clear them up. Iíve never had a real allergy test, but I do know that I canít tolerate outside smoke like from woods burning or when people are burning yard debris. My initial reaction to an irritant is small red blotches on my face next to my nose.

My current problem is severe nasal congestion that started about mid-April, and itís driving me crazy! Itís tolerable at times but seems to be worse in the early morning or sometimes late afternoon. When itís really bad, I can tell my nose is almost completely stopped up.

I tried OTC meds and Flonase for awhile with no success, so I finally went to an urgent care on May 23. They saw me for less than five minutes, didnít even look in my nose, and diagnosed allergies and sinusitis. I got a steroid shot and a Zpak prescription for 10 days. I couldnít tell any improvement.

On June 4 I asked them to refill the Zpak, but they prescribed Doxycycline instead for 14 days. I still saw no improvement. On June 18 I started using Afrin spray when I had to. It really helped, but I know you shouldnít use it for more than 4-5 days. I called urgent care back again, and this time they prescribed one week of Pseudophedrine. I took the last dose on June 26.

The congestion is still not gone!!! Iíve tried to research this online with absolutely no luck. I have NO other symptoms like fever, headache, runny nose, etc. This has never happened before in my entire life, just the nasal congestion by itself. I took Claritin this morning and had to use the Afrin spray about 3:00 pm.

Thanks for reading! If anyone else has this problem, Iíd really like to hear about it. At this point I donít know if I should go to an ENT specialist or an allergist or both. Iím really really REALLY tired of it!

    Re: Ongoing Nasal Congestion

As a life long allergy sufferer, I strongly suggest going to an allergist and getting testing, etc. In the meantime, ditch the Afrin. Try a saline spray (Ayr and Ocean are good ones) or a sinus rinse (NeilMed is popular). First thing every morning and periodically during the day if needed. You might also try a zyrtec or allegra (both OTC antihistamines) to see if that helps.
