what does CT scan of sinuses show?

My doctor has ordered a CT scan for an ongoing sinus infection. It responded to 7 days of amoxicillin but came right back (21 days is how long you are supposed to treat a sinus infection), and another antibiotic caused it to start to improve and bounce back while on the antibiotic. I figure it was resistant to taht antibiotic.

Instead of treating it properly with an antibiotic doctor wants to do a CT scan to find out if I really have a sinus infection - he said. He also said that thick yellow stuff doesn't mean an infection, which suggests I may have a bad doctor. He also said it isn't an infection if you don't have a fever - which I am fidning on the web plain ain't so - and in my long experience it plain ain't so. In fact, I've had recurrent colds treated with antibiotic on the assumption that they are really a subclinical infiection.

Now, I have a simmering infection that is doing far more driving me crazy than making me acutely ill - though it has flared several times. The post nasal drip chokes me for half the night despite antihistamine and decongestant, and my asthma persistently acts up. The yellow stuff is sometimes more, sometimes little. Sometimes my head aches and the sinuses over my forehead are sore. One nostril sometimes has a strong bad smell not shared by my mouth or the other nostril.

I have had more people with genuine sinus problems have a CT scan find nothing. When I rescheduled my CT scan this morning because, the mold count having dropped because winter finally half got here, my infection is better, the nurse said the doctor isn't really looking for an infection, he is looking for cysts and blockages and what not.

I can't find anything on the web that tells me if what CT scans show when it comes to sinus infection. I'm sure that if I had anything structurally wrong with my nose I'd know it by now (age 47 and had allergies all my life) and in fact I've had my nose endoscopically examined. I'm not inclined to polyps.

What exactly does a CT scan show when it comes to sinus infection?

It would show if you have fluids in your sinuses.

I don't know about a CT, but a Brain MRI/contrast showed Mucoperisosteal changes involveing the right maxillary sinus, suggestive of inflammatory polyp. so it does show some things and thats helpful to actually know whats in there.

BTW that causes me no trouble. I read about it on the report but the Dr didn't even mention it. I'm 56 and I've never had any known polyup before but I guess this one is totally unimportant in the scheme of things. The MRI was not about sinus problems..We are looking about something else entirely but this showed up in the report anyway.
I don't have any physical sensation of the existance of this polyup. If you have one you won't even know unless it's on the picture. I'm SURE for some people such things can be very problematic and the pic is needed to tell the tale.

BTW I also am full of allergies. I take meds like claritin have an inhaler. I suggest you take the test the Dr recommends. Just because you already have allergies, infection history and asthma it does not mean you can't also have something new.

I've had a CT scan of my sinuses following repeat sinus infections. Treatment prescribed was antibiotics and use of Claritin 10 mg. and Flonase nasal spray 2 puffs 2x daily. I also have asthma which is presently under good control with Advair Diskus/250 1 inhalaton 2x daily and Singulair 10 mg. 1x daily. Whenever my asthma flares very infrequently I am treated with short term Predisone with good results. Good luck

They don't show that much at all. I have had some done in the past and although I have been miserable with my sinuses, it showed nothing.
