sinus infection?~?!?

hey all...yea I have asthma, allergic rhinitis, & atopic dermatitis..ALL of which are flaring in the past week..asthma has been difficult to control, i've been on prednisone 60mg/day & xopenex since tuesday. i also take advair 250/50, flonase, singulair, yasmin, & clarinex..and i've been taking sudafed since tuesday also, for my nose has been sooooo runny! normally my nose is just congested but for once its running like crazy, pnd and everything making me cough all the time, and the pain between my ears & sinuses(my face) is HORRIBLE. hurts soooo bad!! i thought i just had a cold but i'm beginnin to think i have a sinus infection..should i see the doctor?? i've got a long history of sinus/ET problems/infections. the pred. & xopenex are helping, but only just enough to get by.

Re: sinus infection?~?!?

First I would see an ENT, and then I would get some tests done -CT scan of sinuses, or better yet, and endoscopy. Figure out the root cause of all these sinus problems. May be a structural problem in the nose, lodged bacteria, etc.

If structural problems are found, and bacteria is in there, think about getting a FESS (a kind of sinus surgery). I'm at this point right now. It's not worth months of misery every year.

Also, get in to see your allergist, and get some immunotherapy going. I just got back from there today, and it turns out I have a nasty allergy to dust mites that will require it.

Check out http://www.sinucare.com/

there is some really good information on this site, and these doctors are experts in treating people like you and me. You might even be able to get in and see one of them.

Another tip...

Easy on the meds! I have quite honestly discovered that medications (aside from necessary antibiotics) do almost nothing for my condition. I would saty on the Advair to get the Asthma under control, but all the other crap might just make you feel groggy, dizzy, or worse.

Irrigate! Get a machine, or follow beerzoids' advice.

I can't get off all the meds, singulair & advair are 4 my asthma, clarinex actually is what controls my skin allergies, and the flonase does help. flonase makes the difference between pain and livable sinus/ear pressure.
I'm seeing a lung specialist soon(feb. 5), who apparently specializes in allergies, sinus conditions, & some other stuff. Hopefully that will help me get some answers!
The whole irrigation thing scares me! lol it hurts enough when I take flonase & get that in 2 deep..it seems liek tiw ould hurt! how does it work exactly..??
And as for immunotherapy..i don't qualify=(. It's obvious i've got a lot of allergy problems, my doctor has told me that but I cant be tested..it'll bring about NASTY skin rashes(I have SEVERE eczema, it's incredibly hard 2 treat when I've got an outbreak).
So i'm kinda stuck on all ends with this lol..beleive me I really want to get allergy testing, i'm looking into RAST testing(having my blood tested rather than my skin) & i'd love 2 get immunotherapy(well not love..but if it helps well then!)..but..yeah I guess if i'm still hurtin on monday, I'll see my dr. again 4 some antibiotics cuz this don't feel right at all. thanks for the suggestions though..!=)

Don't change your meds without talking to your doctor. It sounds like the sudafed is actually working or your nose wouldn't be running so much. Running is good, even though it feels awful. It does sound like you need to see your doctor. You've probably seen an ENT by now for an eval, but if not, talk to your allergy/asthma doc and go to someone he/she recommends and get an eval. You might want to go up to Advair 500 if your lungs are in bad shape to keep from taking any more pred than you have to. Also, after 7 years of flonase I switched to Rhinocort b/c I thought maybe flonase wasn't working for me anymore. Rhinocort has been very helpful. there's also a med called Rescon MX that I take that has a little bit of antihistamine, prescription level sudafed, and an anticholinergic that helps the mucus dry up. I love it. It's prescription only, of course.

Hope you feel better soon.

Is the prednisone helping you at all? If not, perhaps you could talk to your doctor about Medrol/Orapred. It's in the same family as prednisone; it's generic name is methylprednisolone. It's the same thing you get through and IV at the hospital (Solumedrol). It would control the eczema too.

Meanwhile, drink Mountain Dew. I know it sounds crazy...but drink it. Mountain Dew has a high level of caffeine in it - caffeine is a bronchodilator.

I also found that when I use my inhaler a lot, it contributes to a cycle of asthma->GERD kind of feeling->more asthma->more GERD. My doctor said that because the inhaler relaxes the bronchi, it may also relax the lower esophageal sphincter, which makes the reflux. And then at night some people aspirate stomach acid, which is like inhaling lemon juice. So, "ask your doctor if Nexium is right for you."
