Can an allergist help with sinus issues?

I have had allergies for as long as I can remember, but have never been officially tested. Thankfully, sinus problems have really never been an issue for me, until this past January. I have been in misery ever since, and due to the fact that I didn't realize that my symptoms were more than just a cold, I didn't seek treatment for two months When I did finally beg for help, the acute infection had progressed into a chronic infection, from which it seems there is little hope or escape. So, after months of pain, malaise, and depression, my father offered to help me as a birthday gift by sending me to a real doctor (i am a poor graduate student who will never finish at this rate) . This doctor, I have found out, is an allergist. I guess my question is what should I expect, and can an allergist help me out with my sinus issues? Do they prescribe antibiotics for sinus infections, or send me elsewhere? Will this just be a waste of time and money?

    Thanks for listening

If your sinus problems are being caused or exacerbated by allergy, then the allergist can definitely help you. If they are not, any good allergist will still be familiar enough with sinus "issues" to tell you whether or not you need to see an ENT or if you need a med that the allergist can prescribe and see how that helps you before you go see another specialist.

FYI - Don't be afraid to tell them you are a poor graduate student and need samples. Also, many drug manufacturers have discount programs that folks with limited incomes can apply for with help from their physicians and get more expensive meds for something like $20 per.

Hope you are feeling better soon!
