Help. Feeling miserable. Is it allergies? sinus?

I'm new to this board. I've been feeling miserable for weeks.
I have severe nasal congestion. For me it seems weather related.
When it's rainy and cold, it seems to trigger my congestion.
The nasal congestion is usually worst at nights. Other symptoms: dizzy, woozy, fatigue, dry throat, trouble sleeping and minor chest discomfort.

can't take sudafed. makes me feel worse.

my doctor seems to think it is allergies. he sent me to an allergist. the allergy test showed that i'm allergic to dust and mold. Not pollen.
currently using flonase and saline nasal spray. It doesn't seem to be working.

is this allergies or sinus or something else. i don't have running nose or itchy eyes. no headaches.

sorry for the long message. i'm confused and scared; it's been adversely affecting me at work.. my doctors don't seem to be helpful. they keep telling me its allergies.

i am going through the same thing you are going through. i am scheduled to see a neurologist on monday because the ENT cannot determine what is going on and my CT scan showed my sinus cavities are "clear." my only big problem is the dizzy/foggy feeling. all i can tell you is you aren't alone, i have read where lots of other people are going through this (one ENT made me cry and talked like i was imagining things). just hang in there and keep going to doctors until someone can tell you what's wrong!

You need to go and get a CT scan of your sinuses. I had the same symptoms you did before a scan revealed a bacterial sinus infection and inflammation.

It may be non-bacterial sinusitis. The best treatment for that is irrigation x2 a day, using a machine (about $100-150). I use this with warm water, salt, baking soda, and Alkalol (a mucus solvent).

The Flonase didn't do anything for me either, except give me bloody noses. Ditch it. Astelin works better, but even that is pretty ineffective. Irrigation is your ticket out.

Thanks for the replies. I talked to my doctor, and I am confused. He asked me to use Afrin to get me throught the weekend (it worked). On Monday, I stopped using Afrin and sure enought I was totally congested again. Today, he left me a message that if I'm still congested to continue using Afrin the rest of the week. His rationale is that since my congestion is probably due to the weather that maybe I might be better by next week. It's already been two miserable weeks of total congestion and dizziness. Isnt't afrin harmful if used for more than a couple of days?

Re: Help. Feeling miserable. Is it allergies? sinus?

I have had the post nasal drip on & off for over a month. We have had so much rain that the mold count is extremely high. I have burning in my throat where it drains down, plus a low grade fever. My doc thinks it has now gone into a good sinus infection, so I just started an anti-biotic today. Almost everyone in my family has this to one degree or another, we all have allergies & some have asthma. I think it is the weather, we don't usually have this much rain.

Also, I was using Astilin spray from the ent doctor, but it only helps temporarily for a day or two & then the symptoms come back again.

Re: Help. Feeling miserable. Is it allergies? sinus?

Hello everyone. I can totally relate to what you all are going through. For the past ten months I have had that same drip along with the constant feeling of a low grade sickness/virus. Fatigue, dry mouth/throat, extremely bad post nasal drip, trouble sleeping, headaches, congestion etc. Just like poster Feeling Sick, it has started to impact my work and social life. People think I am crazy because I feel sick all the time. I never know how bad I am going to feel when I wake up in the morning. It's definitely no way to live.

I have been to see three specialists as well as my primary care doctor numerous times. Not one of them could tell me what was wrong. They put me on every prescription nasal spray and antibiotic in the book, and all they did was make me feel worse. NOTHING has worked.

Just last month I went to the dentist for a cleaning (which I had put off twice before because of all the sinus pressure/drainage) and had a very interesting experience. The hygenist looked in my mouth for about 30 seconds and asked me if I was feeling OK, which I thought was interesting. My only hope was that she was going to be the one to finally diagnose my problem. After telling her about the symptoms I had been experiencing for the last 10 months, she said "that makes sense. Your mouth, throat, nasal cavities and most likely intestines are completely infected by Candida." For those of you who don't know, Candida is basically an internal yeast infection that has grown out of control. If you have been through several rounds of antibiotics over the past year or so, eat a lot of refined flour, sugar, etc., the natural yeast in your body can take over the "good bacteria" and kill it off. Basically that's all antibiotics do. They are great for getting rid of infections, but they also kill all the "good bacteria" at the same time, causing an inbalance. Symptoms include all of the aformentioned.

I was ecstatic, because I felt after almost a year, this was it. Just to be sure, I went to another dentist for a check up, and without saying anything to him, he came back with the same diagnosis in under a minute.

I am now on a special Candida diet and I am being treated with Diflucan, an antifungal (NOT antibiotic), for the next 8 weeks. It's very hard to get rid of, but you can. I have been on the diet and meds for three weeks now, and the fatigue, headaches, post nasal drip etc. are FINALLY starting to subside a bit. The doctor told me as treatment goes on, everything will eventually stop and I will be back to normal. I am not 100% yet, but definitely feel like I'm on my way, even if it's ten months too late in my opinion. At least now I know what it is.

Sorry for the long post but I thought this might benefit some of you, or at least you can look into this possibility or get tested for it, because you never know. The Mayo clinic recently published a study that 80% or more of all chronic sinus problems are due to fungal infections (which includes yeast). Not saying this is the answer for all of you, but it sure may help some. I would have never guessed. Thank heavens for the dentist, because for some reason Western medical doctors don't want to believe in this condition. Eastern medicine has has this figured out for years. By the way, I am male, so don't think this is something women only get. Anyone can get it. Again, Candida is internal, not external. I just think it is very strange that so many people on the allergy boards have the same exact symptoms I have.

Best of luck to all of you and I will try and keep you posted as I make progress. Hang in there everyone.
