    Question chronic sinusitis help please

i suffer from allergies very badly ....

here is what is going on...

i have chronic sinusitis, i have to get antibiotics about every 2 or three months after it leads to infection

    it is from my allergies

for the past three months i have been getting headaches constantly

first i went to the eye doctor, thinking maybe my prescription needed tweeking.... they said there that i had optic nerve head swelling and wanted me to see a neurologist

went to the neurologist.... in between this time, i had gotten sick and took antibiotics and my headache had cleared

the neurologist wanted me to get a second opinion on my optic nerve head swelling, so i went and got a second opinion which came out clear of not having it ..... but my headache was clear at this point.... it was directly after antibiotics

sooooo, my neurologist wanted mri's done, which my insurance company declined to pay

my headaches are back everyday and they were only gone for about 2 weeks(ofcourse in those 2 weeks is when i went the neurolgist and eye doc)

my allergist switched me off of singulair and allegra d, and now i take liquibid... i also take rhinocourt

hoping it would end my headaches

i also started taking the allergy shots, which seem to be going well

sooo, i dont really know where to go from here

do i go back to the neurologist ? should i go back to the eye doctor ? specifically while i am having headaches????

or do i work it all out with my allergist? or do i go see a specialist in sinusitis?

i dont know where to go from here

the other day i did buy those breathe right nose strips out of utter desperation of trying to breathe through my nose.... and to my suprise, they absolutley clear my nose, and lessen my headache tremendously....not completely, but to a point where i feel like i can actually face the day

this leads me to believe that maybe i should be seeing a specialist for my nose???

im confused..... and also im utterly terrified of the sinus irrigation stuff, so i know i wont be trying that....

i just dont know what to do , which doctor to see, or which direction is the best for me

    anyone have any help???

HMMM, seems to me you might have some structural problems going on. I'd have an ENT look to see if you might have a deviated septum or something like that. Sometimes structural problems can cause all of the constant sinus infections and problems we have. I know all about it, just has my deviated septum fixed. You'll need a CTscan done if you haven't already had one done. Good luck.

I agree with halls. Deviated septum or nasal polyps. Get a ct scan of all sinuses including paranasal. If the sinus flooding scares you try nasalcrom nasal spray instead. It works to control the allergies which in turn will prevent infection which = relief while you are searching for answers.

Yes, I will go to the ENT. I had to go because I have chronic stuffy nose and got 3 sinuses infections this year. He recommeneded daily nasal irrigations (twice a day). and a nasal spray called Astelin which is not helping at all. I have to go back and see him in 1 week.
I wish you luck.. I know how terrible this infectins are!!! Good luck!!

Hi. There are some severely allergic folks out there who get repeated sinus infections who do not have any other conditions. I'm one of them. Yes, go to an ENT just to make sure you don't have any structural or fungal problems. If you don't, some things I do other than what you are doing:

    regular nasal rinsing.
Rescon MX - a prescription drug with a lot of sudafed, a little antihistamine, and an anti-cholinergic which helps with the mucus. You cannot take any other product that also has sudafed in it when you take this.
Cough syrup with guifanesin, which thins the mucus.

    Good luck.

I had the sinus surgery about 5 years ago believe me it helpd termindusly I would get recurring infections except min would usually come back wek or two ater I would finish the antibiotics. The sinus surgery isnt that bad at all. I am horrible with pain and I survived and I dont remember the pain being that bad. I would definately talk to him I am sure you have had test done to see what exactly you are allergic to if not tat would help allot I am very allergic to mold and mildew and I was living in a real old farm house getting out of there made a world of difference also

Wow, you sound just like me (Original poster)!! I get about 4-5 Sinus infections a year, I try and bulk up on vitamins get lots of rest, drink fluids, all that stuff, but I still get them and the longer I wait to get antibiotics, the longer it takes me to get over it. It totally sucks and since I don't have insurance, I can't get anything major done yet. Have you been tested for allergies so you know what's bothering you? An ENT I saw seemed to think that if I were to be able to get on allergy shots that are made for what I'm allergic to (we don't know yet though) I'd be ok...

I had all of that too, for years, and every time, the doc just treated the symptoms. Til I finally got a smart one, an ENT, who was actually seeing me for sleep apnea and discovered that I had overly-large turbinates, a deviated septum, and numerous other apnea-related things that were also causing allergy and sinus trouble. I had surgery, mainly for the apnea which is serious, and it did not correct that, but it did seem to alleviate the allergies and I do not think I have had a sinus infection (or even a cold!) since the surgery. I was also taught one other little secret. Use saline (Walmart) in your nose anytime it is dry because when it gets dry, you are much more likely to catch colds due to the inability of those tiny nostril hairs to catch the cold germ before it goes into your system. The saline helps the inside of your nose stay wet so those little hairs catch the germs, thus preventing the cold, which often leads to the sinus infection. (This works, and the saline is pretty cheap.)

I just went to the doctor after several days of a low grade fever, stuffy nose, and difficulty taking a deep breathe. I was diagonosed with a sinus infection. I took all the meds, and 2 weeks later, I feel the same. Does this kinda sounds like what you are experiencing?

    Re: chronic sinusitis help please

I would definitely reccomend going to an ENT. I suffered with chronic sinus infections and bad sinus headaches and constant stuffy nose for many years. My ENT also has me doing the nasal/sinus irrigation, and it does sound gross, but it has helped tremendously. The salt in the saline water helps to thin out the mucous and helps it to come out.

I also found out I had nasal polyps and a very badly deviated septum. After 4 surgeries, I only get a sinus infection at the beginning of the cold season when the heat comes on. I also do nebulized antibiotics and steroids when I do get a sinus infection, so that the medication gets right into the sinuses to kill the infection. The regular antibiotics don't even touch the infection, as they can't reach the sinuses. I would have never thought of something like that. I have a truly AWESOME ENT! Do some research on "nebulized antibiotics" and you'll find some very useful information. In the meantime, try the nasal irrigation. It also helps with the swelling of the nasal passages.

    Good Luck!

P.S. If they haven't been purged already, there are some other threads on my sinus adventures from about a year ago.

    Re: chronic sinusitis help please

O.K. I think I might know what's going on here.

Now I'm NOT a doctor, but I know a lot about this problem, because I went through hell with my sinuses for about 6 months before finally correcting the problem.

If you frequently go on antibiotics, along with Prednisone, or any other type of systemic steroid, it can increase inter-ocular pressure in the eye, and even lead to inflammation. What your eye doctor may be seeing, is a side-effect of the steroids.

Your allergies are probably playing a big role. An allergic response in the sinuses can cause tissue to swell, and blockages to form. Then infection develops. It's a vicious circle. Get into some immunotherapy immediately, it will take a while to work, but believe me, it works.

Your symptoms don't sound like anything other than chronic sinusitis. A lot of people on this board have been through it all before.

Most importantly, get an irrigation machine and start irrigating your sinuses twice a day. I can give you some pointers on this.

Antibiotics should only be used if the infection is severe. Irrigation can clear a minor infection easily.

Been there had those awful all day everyday headaches, then I tried the nasal rinse with warm salt water, and it's been heaven since!!!! I dumped out that "other stuff" in the bottle and used the warm salt water, and within minutes I'm blowing "stuff" out of my nose or I can feel it drain down the back of my throat. I only do it when I get that headachy feeling waking up in the morning. I've had to use it these past few days due to paint fumes, which have irritated my sinuses big time. The nice thing with this rinse, I don't get any side effects, only the stinging from the salt, which is tolerable. See if it works with you, anyone else use this remedy.

    Re: chronic sinusitis help please

I use it almost every day, especially in the winter when it's dry. It helps keep the stuff from building up. I've had chronic sinus problems for all of my life, and finally between irrigating my nose and 3 sinus surgeries in one year, I can finally live without having to take decongestants every single day.

I use a "Neti Pot" to irrigate my sinuses and it works well. The little nose spray bottle doesn't put enough water in there for the stuff to come out. I am also thinking of trying "Salt Aire." It looks kind of like a big spray bottle.

A neti pot is kind of like a little teapot with an elongated spout, that is used for irrigating your sinuses. I got mine at Whole Foods Market, but you can also get them at GNC, order them online, or at any holistic health store. The best one to get is ceramic because they're easier to clean.
Although I can't post any links on the neti pot, you can do a google search for Neti Pot, and you'll get tons of info on them.
    Hope this helps.
