    OHHH the pain...TMJ or sinus?

How many of you have pain at times when you open your mouth to take a bite of a hamburgar? I had that today and I still have the pain. The thing is, the pain feels so deep somewhere. It feels like it can be in my sinus or the muscle of my jaw/cheek. Can TMJ alternate sides of the face with symptoms? Usually, I have pain/tenderness on my left, now a dentist sahid that I have TMJ on my right and today for the first time, I have pain on the right side weather I open my mouth or not. It feels like it's around the cheek/sinus/ear area and when I open my mouth and push into the top of my cheek, I can feel the pain almost to where the top of my back teeth would be inside. What do I do to relieve this pain? Does this pain ever bother anyones sight at times? This is miserable!

Hello singer, I am new to TMJ, I have it mostly on my right side, sometimes it affects the left. I have had a ct scan, it all came back clear, my ENT says my sinuses are ok, no worse than usual, It does almost feel like sinus trouble to me sometimes. I am not big on medicine, so I just take Excedrine and try and sleep it off. And, sometimes my eyes get a bit blurry, I have read that that is a symptom. I don't know if TMJ is causing the blurriness, my sinuses, or my eyes where I may need glasses. I feel alot of my tmj deep in my ears. I know this hasn't helped much. Maybe it will help knowing someone is listening, and going thru the same thing as you. Hope you get well soon...Amy

The symptoms you describe are TMJ. I have had pain in my sinuses and pressure in the bridge of nose for sometime now. I also have pain in the cheek muscles and the the upper teeth, all symptoms of TMJ pain. I have found great improvement im my symptoms since a started wearing my splint. The splint i have is a condyle repositioning splint and it seems to work really well. However, the key to sucesseful splint therapy is to find someone who actually knows what their doing. If he or she is not compitant then they could make your symptoms worse. Also, it's very important to have the splint adusted on a regualr basis. The reason is that the splint will let the muscles relax and often the muscles on both sides of the face may relax at different times which can cause an uneven bite in relationship to the splint. This is why the adjustments are needed. I have also started massage therapy for my neck and back along with the face muscles, this has help greatly. I have had TMJ for about eight years now and have suffered extreme facial pain and headaches as a result of it. It appears that the pain comes in cycles and can last anywhere from a couple of days to years, it just depends. My advise would be to find a DMD who specializes in TMJ and go from there. If you do nothing then things may resolve on their own or they may continue to get worse. It's really hard to tell. Anyway, I certainly feel your pain and my thoughts are with you and the others on the board who suffer from this terribel condition. Keep looking - help is out there.

    Jim.

Thanks Jim and Amy. I just can't believe the pain when trying to yawn even! I have searched for a good TMJ specialist but it seems that none are in my area as there aren't that many. I will continue the hot pack though!!!!
